What matters before the open

Memory pricing acceleration, AI-infrastructure financing strain, a Middle East crude/products cutoff, and yen weakness after the BOJ's split hike with widening sovereign spreads are the leading themes.

Main narratives

day change
01

Memory pricing is repricing upward as AI demand outruns supply, but the debate is cycle duration

Intel's CEO said some memory prices are up 5-7x and the shortage worsens into 2027. RBC's Asia checks point to 80-100% HBM price increases for 2027. Omdia models 2026 DRAM revenue +147% and NAND +311%, with DRAM fulfillment below 1.0x all year, while SK hynix NAND revenue rose 89.5% sequentially. Cramer disclosed buying Micron. A Reddit commenter calls chips 'toppy,' so the dispute is duration, not direction.

02

AI capacity is selling out while the funding to build it gets more expensive and more dilutive

CoreWeave upsized its convertible offering to $3.7bn from $3bn. Goldman expects $420bn of hyperscaler gross debt issuance in 2027, and SoftBank increased its credit line citing rising AI debts. IREN says 2026 capacity is sold out and Nebius is raising GPU rental prices about 20%. A CoreWeave bear cites interest expense at 25% of revenue and a critic says only 10-15% of IREN's pipeline is contracted.

03

The Middle East cutoff is hitting crude allocations and refined products, not just headline crude

Saudi Aramco told European customers they will receive no crude allocations next month after the East-West pipeline attack, with separate reports saying European refiners get no Saudi crude. Diesel is at record highs, $200/bbl in Europe and $220 in the US, pipeline exports are zero and tanker rates are through the roof. Aramco is bidding for European diesel and gasoline, and a major Midwest refinery is offline.

04

A split BOJ hike has not stabilized the yen, and sovereign spreads are taking the strain

The BOJ hiked to 1.25% in a 7-2 split, but the yen weakened past 157 and the JGB curve steepened as Ueda refused to commit to back-to-back hikes; Japan's finance minister said further coordinated FX intervention remains possible. France's 10-year spread over Germany topped 100bp for the first time since 2012, with the deficit forecast at 5.4% of GDP. UBS flipped to BoE hikes and JPMorgan added an ECB hike.

IREN: 2026 capacity sold out, but contract coverage is thin

IREN says its 2026 capacity is already sold out while demand still exceeds supply, but a critic notes only 10-15% of the overall pipeline is contracted; the swing factor is converting capacity announcements into signed revenue.

Tom Lee: a max-hawkish Fed is a bullish setup, but the rally is delayed

Lee argues the hike removes future tightening uncertainty and should trigger a relief rally, contingent on the Fed actually delivering and forward guidance not turning more hawkish.

Gundlach stays short duration as long-end risk builds

Gundlach warns the next US recession could trigger a debt crisis and send long-term Treasury yields sharply higher, so he is focusing on shorter-duration assets rather than owning the long end.
