What matters before the open

Brent tops $100 on US-Iran tanker strikes; AI hardware demand accelerates (Nebius, Qualcomm-Amazon); elevated Treasury yields persist as AI corporate debt crowds out supply; Bessent's yen push raises carry-unwind risk.

Main narratives

day change
01

Brent breaks $100; physical market already at $108 on Hormuz escalation

US forces destroyed five Iranian tankers and Iran retaliated, pushing Brent above $100 with physical barrels near $108. European gas hit a three-year high and diesel rose more than twice as fast as crude. RBC sees a high case of $120 if the Hormuz shuttle is disrupted. Chinese refinery run cuts could cap prices.

02

AI compute demand is inflecting higher; supply stays tight into 2027

Nebius says demand visibility stretched from 18 to 24 months and demand is growing faster than supply. Qualcomm's Amazon deal includes up to $60B of chip orders and a $4B equity warrant. OpenAI says Astra demand may force it to pause new Pro subscriptions. Substrates and MLCCs remain bottlenecks, but Kioxia warns memory prices have risen enough.

03

AI-funded corporate debt and fiscal supply keep long-end yields elevated

September high-grade issuance is set to be the largest on record near $215B, with $410B borrowed for AI this year. Hyperscaler/Nvidia debt is about 70% of Treasury issuance, and hedge funds replaced central banks as marginal buyers. Treasury's buyback starts today, but PIMCO notes bonds at 5% yields now compete with equities; skeptics doubt buybacks change the deficit math.

04

Bessent's yen floor plus BOJ hike risk could unwind carry trades

Treasury Secretary Bessent said he has asymmetric information and is 'the house' on the yen; USD/JPY fell toward 150 with hedge funds targeting 140. Japan likely sold Treasuries to fund intervention and the BOJ leans toward a hike next week. Adam Posen calls the posture ill-advised and says only BOJ hikes would stabilize the yen; a violent unwind would pressure funded positions.
