What matters before the open

The tape is a late-stage equity correction where quality is favored but more index weakness is possible, a memory complex where Kioxia guided almost no sequential growth, optical M&A math around Marvell-Lumentum, and China policy signals against a contractionary PMI.

Main narratives

day change
01

The equity correction is late-stage, but Wilson still sees more index-level weakness before the clearing events pass

Morgan Stanley's Mike Wilson calls the June-starting pullback a late-stage mid-cycle transition, not a new bear market. He expects quality, asset-light service names to lead, while AI-related credit supply, the US midterm election and tightening liquidity must clear before a durable bottom. Bloomberg's panel likewise calls the early-week bounce premature, keeping near-term volatility elevated. One macro account is already short equities into the event risk.

02

Memory is no longer one trade: HBM4 specs were cut, NAND pricing stalled and Kioxia's profit guide missed

Nvidia cut Rubin HBM4 bandwidth to 19.2 TB/s and trimmed NVL8 capacity, which PhotonCap treats as a supply/yield question rather than simple clocking. Kioxia warned flash prices are stalling; its shares fell 14% after its third-quarter profit forecast missed estimates. BofA says B200 and H100 rental prices are at new highs. HBM tightness and NAND softness are different exposures.

03

Optical earnings and Marvell-Lumentum deal terms will test AI bandwidth demand

Mizuho estimates an all-stock Marvell-Lumentum deal at a 20-40% premium would imply $1,009-1,178 per Lumentum share versus an $840.70 close, with 29-33% dilution for Marvell. The same week brings results from Lumentum, Coherent, AAOI, Fabrinet and Tower. Gaetano frames optical targets and hyperscaler cash flow as the proof points for AI spending.

04

China's policy backstop is real, but the PMI says the economy is not healing

Bloomberg reports the central bank and securities regulator may discuss market-stabilizing tools, with a daily overnight reverse repo at 1.25% read as short-end easing. Large bank profits are strong, but the official manufacturing PMI stayed below 50 and weakened. Brian Tycangco argues China's floor is in and the STAR Board correction is not an AI bubble.

SanDisk memory dip buying

Retail accounts added to SanDisk: one put new money into SanDisk and Nu Holdings on an overdone selloff, another quadrupled down on SNDK calls, and a third bought back in. The bet is a memory rebound after an overdone selloff.

Semiconductors

Mike Wilson expects another 10-15% decline in semis by mid-November and wants to buy S&P dips only near 7,100-7,200. The view would change with a credit-market clearing event or a sustained breadth recovery.

Alphabet search risk

Some Reddit traders argue AI is cannibalizing Google search and that accounting masks search weakness; another says Google barely displays ads and is buying puts. The bear case is search monetization, not AI infrastructure.
