What changed since premarket

Treasury buybacks may squeeze duration shorts but cannot repair fiscal credibility. AI inference is real as custom silicon, HBM and credit redistribute the profit pool. Software dispersion is widening, while Canadian tariffs and refined-product scarcity keep goods inflation live.

Main narratives

day change
01

Buybacks can squeeze Treasury shorts, not repair fiscal credibility

Treasury's expanded long-bond purchases can force CTA covering and briefly lower yields, but Druckenmiller and several rates desks see price management rather than fiscal repair. Another experienced rates voice says the long end had simply reached value. Duration relief may support risk assets while shifting the adjustment into the dollar and inflation premia.

02

Inference demand is real, but custom silicon is redistributing economics

An ex-Nvidia engineer described inference consumption as immediate rather than speculative, while OpenAI's Jalapeño claims better inference efficiency than current Nvidia systems. Scaling still depends on scarce HBM, software maturity and supply contracts, and AI-linked credit spreads are widening. Nvidia's full-stack integration remains a moat; the profit pool is fragmenting, not disappearing.

03

Software is separating by pricing power and balance-sheet quality

Thoma Bravo accepted 40 creditor-friendly terms as lenders gained leverage over software debt, and Intuit's fiscal-2027 guide missed expectations. Yet Zoom raised its outlook and Box improved retention while posting record revenue. The evidence argues against a uniform SaaS collapse: refinancing exposure and customer value are becoming more important than the software label.

04

Goods inflation stays live even as crude disruption risk eases

Canada's September 8 counter-tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum add a trade-driven cost shock. Oil's headline risk eased as Hormuz mines were cleared and a corridor was discussed, but diesel and heating-oil cracks remain at historic extremes. Longer term, Dangote's export ramp caps U.S. refining margins, so current product scarcity and future margin compression can coexist.

Themes of the session

?
Z-score shows how far this edition's mention count is above or below the theme's own average across 20 comparable earlier editions. +2.7σ means mentions are 2.7 standard deviations above that average — simply, the theme is being mentioned much more often than usual. It measures attention, not bullishness or expected return. Themes need at least 8 posts; gold begins at +2σ, and σ is hidden when history is too thin.

Tactical duration only

One desk expects a CTA short squeeze in Treasuries, while Nick Givanovic prefers TIPS to nominals under sticky 2%-3% inflation. The setup is conditional, not a settled duration call.
