Refined products show record crack tightness
The real physical tightness is showing up in refined product markets rather than crude. Gasoline and diesel are exceptionally strong, and the diesel crack is historically higher than crude while the heating oil crack has traded above $100, implying flat heating oil prices around $190-200. This is the part of the oil complex that ultimately drives consumer prices.

Diesel, heating oil, gasoline head higher.
Energy and chemical suppliers have hit bottom in available US supply, and the Iran conflict destroyed roughly half of productive capacity for key industrial chemicals, LNG, and diesel. Diesel is already up about 35% since February, and Chris expects heating oil, gasoline, and other industrial inputs to move higher into the fall.

Diesel and heating oil stay expensive.
Global refining capacity is down 7-8 million barrels/day, so diesel and distillate prices can stay high even if crude falls; diesel is the world's key product with the most expensive harvest season, and any Gulf hurricane threat could push heating oil and diesel to $5-$7 or more.

Diesel prices will stay elevated due to supply and demand.
Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have choked off Middle East exports of heavy crude, which yields more diesel and jet fuel. Combined with strong demand from heating (chemically the same as diesel), trucking, shipping, and military consumption, diesel prices are rising faster than crude and are expected to stay elevated even if crude pulls back.
