What matters before the open

Memory costs are cutting device volumes, with Q3 PC and smartphone chip shipments down about 20%, while Intel expects server CPU units to grow more than 30% a year. Neocloud financing is tightening as Nvidia reportedly weighs Nscale guarantees, and Brent sits near $115 ahead of possible US action on Iran.

Main narratives

day change
01

Q3 PC shipments fell 20.1% and smartphone SoC shipments fell 21%, with memory costs among the drivers

IDC says worldwide PC shipments fell 20.1% year on year in Q3 to 62.7 million units, and a report quoted by @firstadopter says smartphone SoC shipments fell 21%, driven by rising memory costs, longer replacement cycles and cautious OEM inventory management. TrendForce data relayed by Jukan puts Q4 PC DRAM contract prices up 13-18% quarter on quarter and Q3 notebook shipments down 14% quarter on quarter. Paradis Labs notes SanDisk's non-data-center revenue grew only 4%.

02

Intel expects industry server CPU units to grow more than 30% in both 2026 and 2027

Intel management expects industry server CPU units to grow more than 30% in 2026 and 2027 and sees the server CPU market expanding from about $40 billion to more than $200 billion over five years, per @thebigberbowski. Patrick Moorhead's call notes put an Israel fab outage at about $300 million of Q4 revenue. BofA's Vivek Arya lowered his Intel price objective to $100 and flagged a lack of substrates as a headwind.

03

A compute seller says neocloud financing tightened overnight as Nvidia reportedly weighs more than $5 billion in Nscale guarantees

A compute seller quoted by TheValueist says neocloud deals are being scrutinized harder, interest rates are up and guarantees are now required, while Nvidia remains easy because its residual value is well established. Nvidia is reportedly in talks to provide more than $5 billion in credit guarantees for Nscale's 460MW data center, per a post @kevinxu quoted. An expert note shared by @pequityresearch says Nebius requires 60-65% upfront contract payments.

04

Brent traded at $114.88 as uncertainty remains over possible US action on Iran after the November 3 midterms

Brent December futures slipped 0.4% to $114.88 and WTI to $102 as Tehran signaled openness to diplomacy, per FirstSquawk, but uncertainty remains over potential US and Israeli military action after the November 3 midterms. Newsquawk says crude futures gained after the Houthis said they targeted Saudi oil facilities. BP's CEO called it a banner quarter for refining, though BP expects refining margins to moderate in the fourth quarter.
