Samsung's ₩107.4T record quarter missed revenue consensus while TSMC beat, and Micron's Taiwan union voted 99% to strike. Brent held above $101 on Iran strike options and Gulf storm shut-ins. Hawkish Fed minutes kept a hike live; Jim Bianco flipped to buying bonds at 5%+.

01

Samsung's record quarter missed revenue while TSMC beat — for AI hardware, clearing the record bar is no longer enough

Samsung reported preliminary Q3 operating profit of ₩107.4T — its first ₩100T-plus quarter, roughly nine times the year-ago figure — but revenue of ₩195T missed the ₩202T consensus and the shares slipped. TSMC's NT$1.49T quarter beat expectations with September sales up 54.6%. TengYan's read was that Samsung's DRAM pricing merely tracked contract data, removing an SK Hynix read-through, while CLSA kept a 2027 HBM pricing step-up in view.

02

Micron's Taiwan union authorized a strike at its largest hub while D.A. Davidson set a street-high $3,000 target

A Taoyuan union said 1,994 members — 99% of ballots cast — authorized a strike over Micron's bonus scheme; Taiwan is the company's largest manufacturing hub with about 15,000 employees, and the Taoyuan and Taichung unions represent more than 80% of them. Shares fell over 2% premarket. D.A. Davidson raised its target to a street-high $3,000, arguing a three-to-five-year growth trajectory.

03

Brent above $102–104 and Gulf shut-ins put a live supply premium back into energy

Reports that Washington may prepare military options against Iran before the midterms lifted Brent to $102–104 and WTI up 2% near $90, while shipping attacks kept supply risk elevated. US operators shut in Gulf production ahead of a storm, and the IEA agreed to accelerate stock releases, prioritizing diesel. Hormuz flows remain near prewar levels, so the premium rests on escalation risk rather than lost barrels.

04

Fed minutes kept a hike live while 5%-plus yields split the duration debate

September minutes showed all 19 FOMC participants backed the hike, with inflation risks skewed upward and most favoring another increase by year-end; AI capital spending was cited as a price pressure. Gold traded near a nine-week low as Strait of Hormuz tensions raised inflation concerns and a firmer dollar added pressure. Jim Bianco reversed six years of bond bearishness, calling 5%-plus 5s-to-30s yields fair value.

Labubu Trader: light positions, waiting on volatility and breadth

Keeps positions light after the AI run, wanting bond-market volatility and 10-year yields to settle and market breadth to resolve before adding risk; sees a Democratic midterm sweep as a trigger for a quick 10-year yield reversal.

Paramount Skydance credit

IREN reliability complaints

SemiAnalysis told users IREN's Prince George and Mackenzie sites suffer multi-day outages, storage failures and link flaps, calling it the industry's worst site; a rebuttal argues Mackenzie has no customers yet and the $9.7B Microsoft contract sits at the newer Childress build. One r/wallstreetbets account called IREN's spending scam-like.
