What matters before the open

AI infrastructure financing is under scrutiny: SoftBank's jumbo junk deal cleared thinly, Oracle-linked SPVs stalled, and AI credit spreads widened. Memory tightness extends into 2028. China's Broadcom audit caps summit relief. Hawkish Fed repricing lifted the 2-year to 4.79% and the dollar to an eight-week high.

Main narratives

day change
01

Hawkish repricing now runs through the dollar, the front end and European central banks.

The 2-year Treasury reached a year-high 4.79% and DXY hit 100.862 as markets priced a fully delivered December Fed hike and a 53% chance of an October move. BofA flipped its BoE call to hikes in November 2026 and February 2027, while ING and Bloomberg's MLIV strategist call ECB pricing of three hikes excessive. Fidelity's Efstathopoulos sees three-to-four hikes as more likely than one-and-done, while options traders are hedging fewer hikes than priced.

02

AI infrastructure financing is repricing from abundant capital to credit scrutiny.

Zero Hedge reports Oracle-linked Project Jupiter loans trading below 90 with the 4.5GW project mothballed and SB Energy delaying an 8GW IPO. SoftBank's jumbo junk deal drew only a ~2x book, disappointing versus the 5-6x expected for a hot deal. AI-linked corporate debt trades near 115bp versus 78bp for the broader market. Against that, Anthropic is negotiating a 1GW lease and Firmus seeks $10bn for a 360MW Nvidia campus.

03

Memory tightness is being extended into 2028 while the next HBM node slips.

Deutsche Bank sees the DRAM imbalance worsening through 2027-28 before equilibrium in 2029 and possible oversupply in 2030; UBS raised its 2027 Nvidia GPU production estimate to 8.8m units and sees Google TPU and Amazon Trainium packages at 9m and 3.2m. JPMorgan now expects 16-high HBM adoption no earlier than 2029, while Samsung pulled wafer-to-wafer hybrid bonding forward into its D0a DRAM roadmap. Wafer long-term contracts are being negotiated 15-50% higher.

04

The Trump-Xi summit will not resolve chip and rare-earth leverage.

Bloomberg reports Xi is unlikely to bring a Chinese CEO delegation, and USTR Greer floated a truce extension of only three months versus market hopes of a year. Jefferies expects no semiconductor or rare-earth breakthrough, with likely relief limited to Boeing aircraft, medical devices, agriculture and energy. Rare-earth export licenses remain a bargaining chip, while China is auditing Broadcom equipment in state-backed data centers and Beijing opened a data-security probe into DeepSeek and Moonshot.

Bonds at 5% yields

Animal Spirits hosts Michael Batnick and Ben Carlson both disclose bond purchases, with Batnick saying it is the first time he has personally bought bonds in his career, citing 5% yields not seen since before the financial crisis and noting a 60/40 portfolio now needs only about 8% stock returns.

UBS capital overhang

The Swiss upper house backed a requirement that UBS fund 90% of its foreign units with CET1 capital; Goldman estimates $17B of extra capital, but UBS shares still closed higher about 0.9% on the vote. The lower-house vote and any capital-return revision are the next decision points.

2G Energy won a 275MW Energy Vault order for US AI data-center power and reported Q2 order intake of €422.4M versus €8.3M a year earlier, but the billion-euro 2028 revenue figure is not yet official guidance; the 1 October Capital Markets Day decides whether the math holds.
