Diesel cracks at $122 and a record distillate draw keep the product squeeze and the export-ban debate alive

The US diesel crack versus Brent spiked to $122/bbl into contract expiry, and EIA data showed distillate stocks falling 2.25M barrels against an expected build, with refinery runs down 1.5% and Midwest gasoline at record lows. Trump is holding crisis talks on a diesel export ban; BofA warns a ban needs domestic shipping capacity and risks regional shortages and higher gasoline prices.

02

Record breadth divergence and a long bond above mega-cap earnings yields expose index-level concentration

Barclays calls the gap between S&P strength and market breadth the worst since at least 2004, with small caps about 9% below August highs and hedge funds selling US equities for the first time in three weeks, led by macro products and a six-week Health Care selling streak. With the 30-year near 5.6%, nine of the ten largest US companies carry forward earnings yields below it.

03

Frontier launches are now gated by safety review while token prices fall

Google limited Gemini 4 Argon to select cyber defenders and enterprise customers pending US government safety evaluation and priced it at $2 per million input and $10 per million output tokens, undercutting rivals. OpenAI held back Astra 6.1 over scope and authorization failures; the FTC opened a broad probe into OpenAI and Anthropic over autonomous-agent harm, and Florida's attorney general wants new models barred without third-party approval.

Themes of the session

?
Z-score shows how far this edition's mention count is above or below the theme's own average across 20 comparable earlier editions. +2.7σ means mentions are 2.7 standard deviations above that average — simply, the theme is being mentioned much more often than usual. It measures attention, not bullishness or expected return. Themes need at least 8 posts; gold begins at +2σ, and σ is hidden when history is too thin.

Frontier AI equity: admired, not underwritten

Ackman calls Anthropic perhaps the greatest business story he has seen but says he is unlikely to invest, citing open-source/open-weight competition and heavy capital consumption; Pershing Square prefers predictable compounders such as Microsoft, Visa and Mastercard.

Nike into the print

Northwise likes Nike's running progress and retail repair but stays patient, saying lifestyle still needs work; a separate holder is long 6,000 shares, arguing estimates were cut to multi-year lows and short interest as a share of float is historically high.

Levered, crowded AI books

Citadel bought most of Situational Awareness's AI portfolio after forced deleveraging, with Griffin citing too much leverage and enthusiasm; separately TraderStewie sold NBIS after three failed resistance breaks, and kevinxu exited Cerebras positions at a loss on chip-sourcing drama, lockup and insider selling.

Small caps and rate-sensitive risk

Alpine Saxon Woods' Sarah Hunt says a whole curve above 5% was a line in the sand for small caps, which sit about 9% below their mid-August highs, and HSBC's Max Kettner stays short the Russell 2000 because almost 45% of its debt is floating rate.
