Anthropic's BB+ rating from KBRA, Taiwan's reported curbs on AI-chip exports to China, ExxonMobil's refining-margin gain and the iPhone Duo's delivery slip to January 25 lead the midday edition.

Main narratives

day change
01

Anthropic received a BB+ rating from KBRA as banks reportedly assemble a $60B chip financing

Anthropic received a BB+ credit rating from KBRA, one notch below investment grade, ahead of a $35 billion chip financing deal, per @DeItaone. Banks are reportedly assembling another $60 billion package for AI chips developed by Google and Broadcom, and Anthropic could issue up to $42 billion in convertible notes to finance chip leases. Separately, New York City Comptroller Mark Levine urged Anthropic to delay its IPO until it shows progress on AI safety.

02

Taiwan is reportedly tightening AI-chip export controls on China and plans $4B for U.S. industrial parks

Taiwan is reportedly preparing tighter export controls to keep advanced AI chips out of China, a step a Bloomberg guest called favorable for US tech. Seeking Alpha reports Taipei also plans to spend $4B developing U.S. industrial parks to build Nvidia's local supply chain. Separately, Samsung reportedly plans to break ground on a second Taylor, Texas fab this November, with mass production targeted for 2030, per DigiTimes.

03

ExxonMobil's Q3 8-K shows about $4.5B from higher refining margins against a $1.3B oil-price hit

Per @thevalueist's read of ExxonMobil's preliminary Q3 8-K, higher refining margins contributed about $4.5B to Q3 earnings, versus $4.1B of refining earnings in Q2, while lower oil prices reduced earnings by about $1.3B. @thevalueist attributes the refining gain to soaring diesel prices as wars in the Persian Gulf and Russia disrupted fuel-making capacity. Separately, Vale's head estimates that Middle East-driven energy and freight costs are making about 10% of seaborne iron ore supply unprofitable.

04

iPhone Duo delivery dates slipped to January 25 while UBS flagged shorter iPhone Pro wait times

Apple's iPhone Duo pre-order inventory sold out almost immediately, with delivery dates slipping to November 16-23 and later to January 25. Per @DeItaone, the sellout may reflect limited initial production amid reported manufacturing challenges rather than exceptional demand. UBS kept a Neutral rating and $296 target, citing Evidence Lab data showing iPhone Pro wait times 4 days shorter year over year and Pro Max wait times broadly unchanged.

Contrarian read on X sentiment

@Kaizen_Investor says most of the stocks they set price targets for months ago have fallen below those targets and that they have never seen such negative sentiment on X, which they see as often a good contrarian indicator.
