Real Vision
Short Thai baht on peg break.
In early 1997 Dan built a short dollar/Thai baht forward because Thailand’s economy was weakening while the baht remained pegged to a rising U.S. dollar, crushing export competitiveness and pressuring reserves. He argued the baht needed to fall 20-30% while the carry cost was only about 1%, creating a hugely asymmetric risk/reward. Thailand ran out of reserves to defend the peg, the baht depegged in July 1997, and the fund made about $50 million in a week or two.
