German automakers structurally lose China market
German automakers Mercedes, BMW and Volkswagen are losing ground in China, once their most important growth market, as Chinese consumers view their own electric vehicles as having better technology and faster development cycles. German companies are forced to cut costs as their huge China profits disappear and they remain in catch-up mode.

German automakers losing China share rapidly.
German automakers Mercedes, BMW, and Volkswagen are losing ground in their most important growth market, China. All three reported Q2 China sales declines of at least 30%. Chinese consumers now see domestic EVs as superior, with better technology and faster development cycles, leaving German brands with inferior offerings. Mercedes sold only about 2,000 units of its new electric car in H1, versus over 80,000 for a comparable Xiaomi model. The profit pool from China is disappearing, and companies are being forced into cost cuts at home because they cannot slash vehicle prices without hurting margins and stock valuations. Little evidence of a turnaround exists, and the strategy of becoming more Chinese via partnerships is falling short.

"Now there is, of course, a very fiercely competitive Chinese automotive market in which the Germans are now having a very difficult time... exports of German motor vehicles... to the united states dropped to 18% last year." German automakers are facing a dual crisis: they have lost their competitive moat in China (their primary growth engine) and are failing to successfully pivot to the US market. This suggests a structural contraction in earnings power. Short German Autos as they lose market share in both East and West. Unexpected Chinese stimulus benefiting foreign JVs or a sudden resurgence in US demand.

Mercedes missed estimates, margins are under pressure, and they face "fierce competition" in China, their most important market. Legacy auto is in a "death spiral" of high costs and declining pricing power. Unlike Siemens, which pivoted to software, Mercedes is stuck with hardware exposure in a market (China) where domestic brands are dominating. Avoid or Short. The luxury strategy is failing to offset volume declines. Unexpected stimulus in China boosting luxury car purchases.
