Capital-light foundry expansion
Japan funds up to $21bn of GlobalFoundries fabs while GFS contributes technology, operations and customers for fees and licensing, with a $955m CHIPS reallocation into silicon photonics, SiGe and advanced packaging.
GlobalFoundries gets a capital-light growth path with Japan funding up to $21bn for two New York fabs
Gaetano writes that Japan will provide up to $21bn for two fabs at GFS's Malta, New York campus while GFS contributes manufacturing technology, operations and customer relationships in exchange for fees and licensing, with the first ~$10bn fab targeting 2029 operations and roughly 900,000 wafers a year; Apple and Renesas are initial customers and GFS is reallocating $955m of CHIPS money toward silicon photonics, SiGe and advanced packaging.
The arrangement expands GFS's manufacturing footprint with outside capital while tying it deeper into the optical and AI infrastructure demand served by silicon photonics and advanced packaging.
Watch The fee terms and retained obligations management discloses, and whether the first fab holds a 2029 operations start.
