October Fed hike risk underpriced
The market is too confident the Fed will hold in October. Bhave and his team see an October hike as on the table: CPI was bad, and if Kevin Warsh is serious about breaking with coordinated forward guidance, a hike would deliver a strong statement that he runs the show. He acknowledges a hawkish surprise would be difficult before the midterms and that the long end is giving the Fed a pass, but warns that not hiking risks undermining the Fed's credibility on forward guidance and inflation. The key test is whether Warsh leads the committee or cedes the bully pulpit to other officials.
