Hormuz disruption supports higher crude prices
The oil market is laser focused on the Iran war and the Strait of Hormuz. A hit on Saudi energy facilities, including a 400,000-barrel-a-day refinery, is stoking supply fear, and Hormuz crude flows are believed to have fallen from about 20 million barrels a day before the war to roughly 7-10 million now. With damage to oil infrastructure, the market is worried prices could go even higher.
Refinery shortages keep product prices high
Refinery capacity is down in the Middle East and Russia, where Ukraine has been hitting Russian refineries, while some US refineries are running at 103% capacity and still cannot close the global distillate gap. The market is seeing very high refined product prices, and there is worry that refined product prices could rise even further from already exorbitant rates.
