Summary

The besties debate whether San Francisco needs the National Guard after Trump's remarks and Benioff's Dreamforce comments, with Friedberg citing sharply improved crime statistics and Sacks arguing a targeted federal operation could clear Market Street's open-air drug markets. The main market segment covers China's new rare-earth export controls, Trump's 100% tariff threat and the US move toward price floors and a strategic reserve: Chamath defends the government-backstop model behind MP Materials, Sacks frames it as national security, and Friedberg prefers deregulation and tax incentives. The episode closes on AI's PR problem, with Google, Microsoft and Amazon data-center projects pulled after local backlash over electricity, water and noise, and the hosts splitting on whether AI job displacement is real.

  • Trump floated sending the National Guard to San Francisco; Friedberg says crime is down 30% citywide and 40% downtown, while Sacks wants a targeted federal cleanup of Market Street drug markets.
  • China imposed export controls on 12 of 17 rare earths effective December 1; Trump threatened a 100% tariff, then Bessent said both sides have substantially de-escalated ahead of the Trump-Xi meeting in South Korea.
  • Chamath argues a US buyer of last resort with price floors and a strategic reserve is the only antidote to Chinese price dumping; Sacks calls it national security; Friedberg prefers deregulation and tax incentives.
  • The hosts discuss China as a reascending power, its five-year-plan capital allocation that produced BYD and Xiaomi, and the WTO-era decisions that let it dominate rare earths.
  • Google, Microsoft and Amazon each pulled or paused a data center in one week after residents objected to electricity prices, water use and noise; Chamath calls it the beginning of a trend.
  • Chamath urges hyperscalers to spend free cash flow on community benefits and wants federal preemption of state AI laws.
  • Sacks says AI drove about 40% of last quarter's 3.8% GDP growth and dismisses job-loss fears; Jason counters that big tech headcount is shrinking while profits rise.
  • Friedberg briefly explains the roughly $40 billion US currency swap supporting Argentina.

Price floors underwrite US rare-earth reshoring
There has been no free market in rare earths for 30 years: China identified rare-earth processing and magnets as strategic, subsidized its champions under WTO developing-nation rules, drove every US and global competitor out of business, and now uses export controls as coercive leverage, so this is national security rather than economics. Price floors are justified because they give US investors enough certainty to reinvest in rare-earth processing and magnet casting without being wiped out by another Chinese price cut. Both sides now accept they cannot stay dependent on each other for critical inputs, so reshoring of processing and magnet production will continue regardless of a Trump-Xi deal.

Government backstop makes MP Materials investable
China's state-backed mercantilism lets it step into markets on demand and dump volume into the spot market, cratering rare-earth prices and putting Western producers who financed capacity on take-or-pay contracts (MP's deal with General Motors) at a structural disadvantage against subsidized Chinese rivals. That is why the US government acting as buyer of last resort with price floors and a strategic reserve, the public-private structure MP Materials recently signed with the government, is the only practical antidote: the US balance sheet is the only one that can absorb Chinese price shocks the way the petroleum reserve does. He is a big fan of this market structure, and sees the future demand that really matters in robotics, where rare-earth permanent magnets are the key input to actuators.

Local backlash starts blocking hyperscaler data centers
In a single week Google pulled a $1 billion Indianapolis data center, Microsoft withdrew a Wisconsin project and an Amazon project near Tucson was mothballed after residents objected to higher electricity prices, water consumption and noise; he sees this as the beginning of a trend in purple and red states that will slow the AI buildout rather than isolated incidents. The hyperscalers need to buy community support with their free cash flow, paying part of local electricity bills or funding solar and storage, because public markets give them no credit for hoarded cash anyway (Meta's stock rose when it burned through its cash) and investing it would make AI capex a true super cycle; federal preemption of 50 state regimes and better industry spokesmen are also needed.

AI boom is driving US GDP growth
AI accounted for roughly 40% of last quarter's 3.8% GDP growth; without the AI boom growth would have been about 2.3%, so AI is the difference between a 4% economy and a 2% economy. The job-loss narrative is media-driven and mostly theoretical: in every prior technological revolution jobs shifted from rote to higher-value work (agriculture fell from 50% of workers in 1900 to 2% by 2000 without mass unemployment), and because humans are end-to-end while AI is middle-to-middle the two are synergistic rather than substitutes. He is very optimistic about the boom and says anyone who wants a strong economy should support it.
