Summary

Bloomberg Daybreak Europe covers overnight markets and macro risks, including Israel's strikes on Lebanon pressuring US-Iran talks and oil, slower Japanese GDP complicating BOJ policy, and weak US data reducing Fed rate-hike bets. Guest Frederik Ducrozet warns of a sharp oil spike if Iran negotiations break and favors rotating from US equities into Europe. The program also discusses US Treasury auction risks, Japan AI buildout positioning, and 13F disclosures from Berkshire, SoftBank and others.

  • Israel strikes Lebanon in the deadliest fighting in months, adding pressure to stalled US-Iran negotiations.
  • Japan's GDP growth unexpectedly slows, but markets still price high odds of a BOJ September rate hike.
  • Weak US retail sales and consumer sentiment reduce Fed rate-hike bets and pressure the dollar.
  • Brent crude edges higher near $89 amid Middle East tensions and fresh US Iran sanctions.
  • Mark Cranfield sees a difficult US 20-year Treasury auction and limited sustained yen upside from a BOJ hike.
  • Frederik Ducrozet warns oil could spike if Iran talks collapse and favors diversification out of US equities into Europe.
  • Alice French notes investors are rotating into niche Japan AI infrastructure names rather than abandoning AI.
  • 13F filings show Berkshire adding Alphabet and Delta, while SoftBank cuts TSMC and pivots toward AI infrastructure.

Yen rally likely fades; JGBs pressured.
Japanese GDP came in below forecast but is still likely enough to get the Bank of Japan over the line for a September hike. However, the GDP deflator above 2% shows Japan is not taming medium-term inflation, which hurts long-term bonds, and today's data do not justify a path to 2% neutral rates; without that, any yen rally after a BOJ hike is likely to be a knee-jerk move that is not sustained.

US 20-year Treasury auction likely struggles.
The upcoming U.S. 20-year Treasury auction faces a tough setup because the 20-year tenor is structurally unpopular, last week's 10- and 30-year sales required the highest yields in decades to clear, and global central banks are pushing toward higher rates, creating negative feedback into U.S. debt issuance. Yields may need to rise further to get the bonds sold.

Oil may spike if Iran talks collapse.
Oil is at a critical point in the fifth month of the Middle East conflict and the market needs clarity on U.S.-Iran negotiations. China has been lowering imports and the U.S. and other producers have helped compensate for lost Middle East supply, but another crisis or a complete break in negotiations would likely cause a sharp spike in prices, with gasoline and refined products adding to inflation pressure.

Favor Europe over demanding US equities.
U.S. second-quarter earnings have been spectacular and the broadening of earnings momentum is striking, but valuations are becoming a little demanding, so he still favors diversification out of the U.S. and into other markets. Europe and other markets can continue to outperform the U.S., with the Middle East situation the main caveat.

Japan AI buildout offers niche upside.
Investors remain bullish on Japan's exposure to the AI buildout. The tech-heavy Nikkei lost about 8% in July but is still up about 30% on the year, and rather than abandoning AI, investors are rotating from overvalued names and diversifying into niche areas of AI infrastructure such as cable makers, robotics, memory and physical AI that have not had the same rally.
