Summary

Director Lee Young-hoon of iM Securities Seoul Financial Center reviews major macro and Korean market drivers with MC Oh Hyun-jin. He argues US 10-year Treasury stabilization is still uncertain into Jackson Hole, WTI crude is likely range-bound near $80, and USD/KRW is likely to stay in the late 1,300s. He also discusses the need for Samsung Electronics and SK hynix shareholder returns, Hyundai Motor Group's disappointing investor day, and his own gradual buying of AI peripheral stocks.

  • US 10-year Treasury yields have not fully stabilized; Jackson Hole is the next key event.
  • WTI crude is seen as range-bound with limited upside around the low $80s.
  • USD/KRW is expected to remain range-bound in the late 1,300s.
  • Korean exporters are viewed as unlikely to break down despite won strength.
  • Samsung Electronics and SK hynix buyback/cancellation are framed as key potential catalysts.
  • Hyundai Motor Group has limited downside after investor day disappointment but lacks an immediate catalyst.
  • AI-related peripheral stocks are being screened and bought gradually by the guest using Ichimoku analysis.

US 10-year stabilization remains uncertain.
Treasury buybacks alone have not stabilized the US 10-year Treasury market; using the Treasury General Account to buy briefly moved yields, but the market doubts demand will absorb supply because hyperscalers are preparing large bond issuance. There is also political willingness to restrict corporate bond issuance before midterms, and Jackson Hole is the next key event, so the 10-year yield is not yet stably resolved.

WTI likely range-bound near $80.
WTI crude's chart looks capped around $80. The US has few usable military cards and Iran also lacks the economic and military capacity to escalate much, so if a US-Iran deal occurs oil is not a major problem, and even without a deal there are few catalysts for another surge. WTI is likely to stay range-bound near the low $80s with limited upside.

USD/KRW likely boxes in late 1300s.
After the sharp won appreciation to around 1,370, additional large FX supply is not obvious. Samsung Electronics' large dividend and Meta's potential 1 trillion won Korean bond issuance create two-way flows, while export trade surplus dollars had been parked without conversion. Around 1,380, both upside and downside are open, so USD/KRW is likely to stay range-bound in the late 1,300s rather than extend sharply.

Won strength won't break Korean exporters.
Won strength should not break Korean exporter stocks because historically foreign investors have bought Korea during won strength, viewing currency strength as national economic health. Electronics-related exporters are already earning record profits and trade at cheap valuations, while other sectors are recovering from past tariff damage, so exporter earnings downgrades from FX are unlikely to shake stock prices.
Lee Young-hoon Director 9:53
Samsung, SK hynix buybacks as catalysts.
Hyundai Motor Group's investor day disappointed because management seemed to have no immediate will to support the stock price; robot and humanoid Q&A was mostly reserved and vague. Heavy short selling hit Kia and related names, but much disappointment is now reflected and prices are unlikely to fall much from here. If a rebound comes, reducing exposure makes sense, while a new catalyst could trigger short covering.
AI cycle not ending yet.
The AI cycle is not ending yet; Nvidia's earnings make it premature to call the cycle over. The earlier extreme concentration in electronics was unhealthy and caused a reflex reaction, but true AI overheating and concentration would be a late-stage signal. For now, market normalization needs to come first rather than calling the AI trade done.
Buy AI peripheral names gradually.
He is personally monitoring and gradually buying AI-related peripheral stocks because the current market environment suits that area. He uses Ichimoku analysis to screen individual names, saying the technique has been unexpectedly accurate in the recent market.
