Ideas
Semiconductor inflection point is near.
The semiconductor correction is close to an inflection point; pessimism is focused on negative free cash flow and China competition, but Nvidia's non-hyperscaler data center revenue doubled from $20B to $40B and now nearly matches its $48B hyperscaler revenue, showing AI semiconductor demand is broadening to enterprises, sovereigns and neoclouds.
Korean stocks rebound next week.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which is directly correlated with Korean equities, showed strong overnight gains and SK Hynix ADR surged, so the Korean market is expected to open and trade meaningfully higher next week.
Oil likely stabilizes despite supply risks.
Oil is the biggest variable, but supply chains are adapting to Hormuz risk through Red Sea routings, AIS transponder workarounds and secured Venezuelan barrels, so oil prices are likely to stabilize rather than spike further; falling oil would also reduce the rationale for further Fed tightening.
High rates won't stop AI semiconductors.
Unlike consumer-driven semiconductor cycles, data centers now account for over 60% of semiconductor demand; hyperscalers can tolerate 10% corporate borrowing costs because their operating margins remain in the mid-to-high 30% range, and AI is removing real economic inefficiencies, so 10-year Treasury yields around 4.8% are a volatility factor but not a reason to reduce AI infrastructure and semiconductor exposure.
Google Amazon custom AI chips accelerate.
Google and Amazon are moving from internal AI accelerators to external sales: Google has formed JVs with Blackstone/Apollo/Broadcom and will supply TPUs to customers such as Anthropic, while Amazon is now selling its own chips externally; for Google this can turn free cash flow positive, and Broadcom is positioned in customization and networking for these AI data center builds.
External AI chips drive memory supercycle.
Because every custom AI accelerator still requires memory, Google's and Amazon's external AI chip push is highly positive for memory semiconductor demand; this is why SK Hynix ADR and Micron surged despite higher rates and oil prices.
Avoid small-cap semiconductor suppliers on FX.
Rapid won appreciation to 1,350 and possibly the 1,300s will create FX-related losses in Q3 for small/mid semiconductor materials, components and equipment companies with weak balance sheets or excessive hedging; some may swing to net losses and suffer sharp one-day stock drops, so investors should filter these names and manage earnings risk ahead of the reporting season.
Memory prices offset strong won.
Strong won will hurt weaker companies, but memory makers are relatively defensive: dollar-based memory prices are still rising 10-20% QoQ in Q3 and high-value HBM4 mix is increasing, so Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix should largely offset FX headwinds and report more resilient earnings than the market fears.
