Summary

The episode focused on the historic precious-metals crash and its spillovers across commodities, equities and crowded trades, with a commodities strategist recommending patience before buying gold and silver. It also covered Kevin Warsh's Fed nomination, weak China PMI data, Hong Kong property views from Hang Lung's Adriel Chan, Nvidia-OpenAI clarification, India's budget, BYD's January sales slump, and China's commercial space ambitions.

  • Gold and silver plunged after a parabolic rally; Chinese retail speculation and a stronger dollar amplified the selloff.
  • Frank Monkam remains long-term bullish on gold but advises waiting for extreme volatility and froth to settle; he also warns of a rates-volatility reset under Warsh.
  • Adriel Chan sees Hong Kong high-end residential and mainland retail bottoming, while Hong Kong/mainland office rents remain under pressure.
  • China's official PMIs fell into contraction, raising expectations for stimulus and possible rate cuts before the NPC.
  • India's budget raised derivatives transaction taxes, hurting Nifty sentiment, though data centers received a long-term tax holiday.
  • BYD January sales dropped 30% on subsidy rollback, while Li Auto grew over 25% and gained share.
  • Galaxy Space's Peter Huang highlighted China's fast-growing commercial space sector and policy support.
  • Market spillovers hit Korea and Indonesia equities, while Nvidia's OpenAI investment clarification pressured tech sentiment.
Ideas
Long-term bullish gold; wait for volatility settle.
Structurally and cyclically the gold thesis is intact: central bank buying, currency debasement, fiscal dominance and lingering geopolitical risk should keep the direction of travel higher. But positioning and technicals are extremely overextended after the parabolic rally and violent flush, so he wants patience and would wait for volatility and froth to settle before adding.
Wait for silver froth to clear.
Silver is even more speculative and unhealthy, with last week's weekly notional around $150 billion and extreme volatility. He likes the long-term precious metals story but wants to see deleveraging, calmer ETF flows and froth come out before engaging.
Warsh may spark rates volatility reset.
Warsh's nomination and likely Bernanke-style communication with less forward guidance may bring a reset in rates volatility, which markets have not fully discounted. That could create another volatility call for rates and broader macro markets and affect gold retail flows.
Adriel Chan Chairman, Hang Lung Properties 28:40
Mainland retail recovery hopeful but cautious.
Mainland China retail leasing is giving cause for hope, with strong Q4 retail sales, record occupancy and foot traffic and a potential Lunar New Year uplift because Chinese New Year falls in February. January was flat and he remains cautious on the near-term outlook.
Adriel Chan Chairman, Hang Lung Properties 29:53
Asset-light pivot amid bottoming markets.
Hang Lung is pursuing an asset-light V3 strategy to expand without heavy capital, reduce gearing and capture operational upside, focusing only on cities where it is strongest and on high-end/niche properties. Markets feel bottomed and high-end is more resilient, but office weakness and a cautious outlook remain.
Adriel Chan Chairman, Hang Lung Properties 31:50
Bullish Hong Kong high-end residential property.
The talent scheme and mainland new arrivals have lifted Hong Kong rental levels and may convert renters into buyers, especially at the high end. He is more bullish on high-end residential than the mass market, which has seen a structural rerating and will take longer to recover.
Adriel Chan Chairman, Hang Lung Properties 34:02
Office rents not bottoming yet.
Office rents remain under pressure in both Hong Kong and mainland China; occupancy must recover before prices can rise, and there is still a lot of vacant space, especially in Central. He does not yet see the end of office weakness, which has offset retail gains.
Sujata Chakraborty Asia Equities Editor, Bloomberg 65:53
India budget hurts Nifty sentiment.
India's budget surprised the market with a higher tax on equity derivatives and no clear measures to revive foreign inflows, worsening sentiment already hit by slowing earnings and 18 months of foreign outflows. The Nifty 50 had its worst Budget Day since 2020.
Sujata Chakraborty Asia Equities Editor, Bloomberg 67:17
India data centers get long-term tax boost.
The budget includes a 20-year tax holiday for foreign companies providing cloud services through data centres in India, alongside capex and infrastructure focus, which investors see as potentially beneficial for the real economy over the long term even if it does not fix immediate market sentiment.
Linda Liu China Automotive Reporter, Bloomberg 72:30
BYD January sales slump signals weak demand.
BYD's January sales fell 30%, a worrying start to the year, as the rollback of EV subsidies and reintroduction of a purchase tax hurt demand in China. The scale of the drop suggests demand has weakened materially and the previous top-four momentum may not hold.
Linda Liu China Automotive Reporter, Bloomberg 73:55
Li Auto gaining share on strong sales.
Li Auto grew January sales by over 25% while BYD slumped, showing smaller EV players are gaining market share as demand slows and subsidies fade. The market dynamics are shifting away from the previous top four.
Peter Huang General Manager for International Business Development, GalaxySpace 77:20
China commercial space is expanding rapidly.
China's commercial space sector is expanding rapidly with central and provincial policy support, mega constellation buildouts, rising launch demand and growing private-sector participation. Galaxy Space is using cost-effective satellite technology and targeting overseas connectivity markets to commercialize satellite internet.
David Ingles Anchor, Bloomberg 90:08
Silver watch 50-day support.
Silver bounced off its 50-day moving average twice during the chaotic sessions after the crash and that support has held so far. It is a key technical level to watch as Europe opens and potential spillovers spread across commodities.
