Summary

Alan Hibbard joins Trey Reik to explain his framework for savings versus investing and money versus currency. He argues that fiat dollars are not a long-term store of value, while gold, silver, and Bitcoin are the best available forms of real money. The conversation covers the monetary trilemma, Bitcoin's role as digital gold, and the likelihood that gold will play an official role in a future monetary regime.

  • Hibbard distinguishes saving (preserving value in real money) from investing (risking value for growth).
  • He says dollars are currency designed for transactions, not savings, and fiat currencies lose value over time.
  • Gold is presented as the best physical money and a long-term store of value; silver is also money but with industrial-demand and supply-discovery caveats.
  • Bitcoin is framed as digital gold and a long-term store of value, though not a scalable day-to-day currency.
  • The monetary trilemma is used to explain why gold and Bitcoin sacrifice scalability for security and decentralization.
  • Hibbard expects gold to be part of a new monetary regime, while silver and Bitcoin are unlikely to have an official role.
  • He advises a balanced, low-attention portfolio and warns against buying assets one does not understand.

Dollars are not long-term savings.
Holding dollars is not saving. Fiat currencies, including the US dollar, are designed to move value efficiently, not store it, and are too easy to produce, so they lose value over time. The dollar is falling apart and the fiscal problem likely requires inflating the dollar away, making it a poor long-term store of value.

Silver is money despite supply caveats.
Silver is also real money and one of the best forms of money alongside gold; it is bread-and-butter savings. However, it carries an asterisk: periodic large discoveries can temporarily make it easier to produce and reduce its store-of-value property, and its industrial demand means it may perform differently from gold in recessions. Still, he counts silver as money and would hold it as part of a diversified real-money allocation.

Gold is real money for saving.
The world is moving toward a new monetary regime, and gold will certainly be part of it, unlike silver or Bitcoin. Central banks have been coordinating gold purchases / right-sizing gold to GDP, Trump and Treasury Secretary Bessent have discussed backing the dollar with gold and a new Bretton Woods, and gold is the only asset that can restore confidence. A cover clause or official gold role is likely, though timing is uncertain.

Bitcoin is digital gold for long term.
Bitcoin is digital gold and the best digital form of money: it sacrifices scalability for security and decentralization, is not suitable as a day-to-day currency, but is a long-term store of value. He personally owns more Bitcoin than gold and ignores short-term price volatility because his time horizon is very long, though he warns it is volatile and should not be bought by those who do not understand it.

Most cryptocurrencies fail and lack use case.
Most of the thousands of cryptocurrencies are a lousy version of the monetary trilemma: they try to achieve scalability, decentralization, and security all at once but do none well, and have no real use case. This contrasts with Bitcoin and gold, which deliberately sacrifice scalability to be secure and decentralized.
