Summary

The video examines the 'second China shock' and its impact on Europe, especially Germany's auto industry. It visits a Bavarian auto supplier facing restructuring and job cuts, then features economists David Autor and Stephanie Flanders debating how China's move up the value chain differs from the first China shock. It also highlights defense and space diversification, disinflation from cheap Chinese goods, and potential ECB rate cuts.

  • China's export surge is pressuring European manufacturing, especially German autos.
  • German auto suppliers are cutting costs, closing plants, and laying off workers.
  • David Autor says China is now a world-class auto and EV competitor, unlike 20 years ago.
  • The second China shock is broader than autos, threatening heavy industry, consumer goods, and high-tech sectors.
  • A German supplier is diversifying into defense, space, and drones.
  • Stephanie Flanders says Chinese exports to Europe are not a simple flood and may be lowering inflation.
  • She notes Germany's defense spending provides a fiscal impulse and the ECB may need to cut rates further.

China competition pressures German auto industry.
China is a major challenge for the German automotive landscape. The shift to battery EVs has made access to battery technology and raw materials much harder for German OEMs, while around 100 new Chinese OEMs have created very tough competition and German component and vehicle exports to China have fallen significantly. Jopp has already seen customer programs postponed and volume drops, forcing plant closures and about 500 layoffs, so the German auto sector faces sustained pressure.
David Autor Professor of Economics, MIT 4:46
China exports threaten European manufacturing.
Chinese exports to Europe are growing rapidly and threaten to displace a large amount of European manufacturing and hollow out sectors rapidly. This is a broad risk to European manufacturing beyond any single industry.
David Autor Professor of Economics, MIT 4:54
China threatens European car industry.
Europe is now in the crosshairs of a second China shock. Unlike 20 years ago, China has moved up the value chain and is now a world-class auto supplier and the best producer of EVs in the world. Europe, especially Germany, has a huge car industry that is threatened by Chinese exports, with risks of rapid displacement and hollowing out.
David Autor Professor of Economics, MIT 8:08
China challenge spreads beyond autos.
The second China shock will not be confined to autos. Because China has moved far up the value chain, it is a formidable competitor in high-value sectors and will also pressure European heavy industry such as rail cars and shipping, lots of consumer goods, and high-tech sectors central to advanced-economy manufacturers.

Diversifying into defense, space, drones.
Jopp is diversifying away from its 80% automotive revenue base. It already supplies semiconductors, medical and general industry, but wants to expand in defense and space as part of a 10-year roadmap and already supplies the drone industry, which has become much more important because of the Ukraine-Russia war. This points to defense, space, and drone demand as areas less exposed to China's manufacturing dominance.
Stephanie Flanders Head of Economics and Government, Bloomberg News 11:37
China disinflation may push ECB cuts.
China's export price cuts are helping pull down inflation in Europe. Bloomberg economists think Eurozone inflation will undershoot the ECB's target this year, and the ECB should potentially be looking to cut rates further, which implies lower Eurozone interest rates.
