AI's next bottleneck might be electricity, not chips
For most of the AI boom, the conversation has been about GPUs. Can Nvidia make enough chips? Can hyperscalers get enough of them?
I'm starting to think electricity is becoming the more interesting constraint.
South Korea's energy minister recently [said](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/south-koreas-power-demand-set-soar-ai-boom-nation-weighs-expanding-nuclear-2026-09-08/) AI-driven expansion from chipmakers and data centers could add 25 to 30 GW of power demand. For some perspective, Reuters says that's roughly equivalent to the output of 20 nuclear reactors.
Google is dealing with the same problem from another direction. Its [new ](https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/finland-risks-strained-power-supply-after-google-ai-deal-opposition-warns-2026-09-10/)€13B AI infrastructure investment in Finland includes a 22-year agreement to buy up to 50% of the output from the Loviisa nuclear plant.
And in the US, Congress is now looking at legislation designed to [prevent](https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-house-take-up-bill-aimed-curbing-data-center-driven-electricity-costs-2026-09-10/) rising data-center electricity demand from being passed on to households through higher bills.
This starts changing how I think about the AI infrastructure trade.
The bottleneck isn't necessarily how many GPUs can be manufactured. Those GPUs still need data centers, transmission, transformers, cooling and enormous amounts of reliable electricity before they can actually generate revenue.
Elon Musk recently estimated that around 15 GW of AI compute produced in 2027 may not be able to turn on that year because the surrounding infrastructure won't be ready.
If AI demand keeps growing at this pace, power generation and grid infrastructure could end up being [just as important](https://blog.reserve.org/ai-supercycle-weekly-sep-9-2026-f1ab7dad160b) to the AI buildout as semiconductors.
Does the power shortage eventually slow AI capex, or does it trigger an equally large investment cycle in energy and grid infrastructure?
