"Deleting" undesirable stocks from index funds by short selling? So let me start out by saying I'm a committed Boglehead, I've been putting most of my retirement savings into a Vanguard S&P 500 index fund every month for 30 years. And I'm not an activist investor, I've got no problem investing in defense contractors and oil companies. But there's a very small number of companies that I *really* can't own in good conscience. What do you think of buying index funds, while also short-selling the undesirable stocks in a brokerage account, in an amount that cancels out their contribution to the index fund? So for example, for every $1000 I spend on a 500 index fund, I would short-sell $58 worth of Palantir since it's 0.58% of the index, so my net position on PLTR would be zero. This would be a long-term position, "short and hold". The benefit would be taking advantage of the benefits of whole-market investing while still being able to sleep at night. The downsides are that it's inconvenient, I might have to pay interest on the short, and margin call risk might be greater since I might have to short "good" stocks. So what do you think? Yeah I know it's a step off the Bogle Path, but are there any problems I haven't thought of?
