What’s my next move? I never thought I’d get to this point.
About five years ago during Covid we lost all of our money. We work in hospitality and both new jobs and burnt through our savings with living and multiple major moves.
In the last number of years, we’ve started a business that’s been successful and after studying this board really buckled down with our finances. This is where we currently are:
Ally HYSA: $150k (this is emergency fund and also holdings for next years tax payments, summer camp, etc). Earning about 3.5% was 4.75% when I opened it.
Roth: $30k VT
SEP: $40k VT
HSA: $20k VOO
(All fidelity)
401k: $60k S&P 500
Currently have about $60k also sitting in our checking account.
We have no debt and we rent our house. We live in a VHCOL area (our work requires this) and thus far renting has made much more sense than buying. We are open to hopeful that maybe we could buy in the next number of years - but right now the point of entry for something decent is $2m and it just doesn’t make sense for us. We currently pay $6k/month in rent. Our annual income is variable but roughly $300k combined.
With this “extra” money in our checking account and moving forward where should we be parking this. We are maxing SEP & IRA and are no longer eligible for HSA. We contribute to 401k beyond the match but we haven’t been maxing it because we’ve felt nervous having the money be that untouchable.
What’s the best next move? We got a late start due to life circumstances but we are trying to catch up smartly while still allowing ourselves a bit of room to enjoy some of what we are making now after so many years of financial strain.
Thanks for any input!
