I’ve been with my current employer for four years. I’m a VTSAX and chill type of guy and since our company’s 401k is with Fidelity, I selected the investment fund option with the lowest expense ratio (FXAIX). The expense ratio is 0.015%.
My January 1, 2025 account balance was $114,964.28 and my December 31, 2025 account balance was $172,621.57.
I was curious about how much I paid in fees and was surprised when I saw fees totaling $257.71 for the year, made up of “administrative fees” and “recordkeeping fees”. It appears these fees are in addition to the ~$25 in fund fees that I’m paying for FXAIX.
I asked my HR about it and they explained how the administrative and recordkeeping fees are calculated — it’s essentially a prorated fee based on the aggregate amount that all employees within our company have invested with Fidelity.
I plan on being with this employer for quite a few more years. Anything I can do to not have to shell out $300 in fees every year?
