I scoured the internet looking for someone in a similar situation as me to find advice, but I’m having no luck. I’ll be 36 in a few months and will be retiring this year and looking for some solid next step advice. I’m currently on a reasonable accommodation at work that is allowing to increase my pension a bit before I walk away. I’ll be collecting 11k tax free from my employers pension fund due to a career ending injury. I also collect 4k a month tax free as a 100% disabled veteran. The only debt a currently have is my 23k car loan. No credit cards, no personal loans, no student loans. This week I opened up an ABLE account, as I have no other retirement funds outside of my pension/VA compensation. I have one kid, who I already transferred all my GI Benefits too and the VA will cover any other college expenses she has, included a stipend. I also have multiple term life insurances covering my family for the next 25 years. With the guaranteed tax free income, should I even bother investing outside of my ABLE account(20k max per year ABLE 500 Fund through fidelity)? I also haven’t used my VA Home loan yet. Should I invest my income heavily to create greater wealth over the next 30 years? Or should I just move somewhere cheap and live my life without worrying about investments and wealth? Currently my fixed expenses is 4k a month with another 2k of flexible spending. But I’d leave NY the second I retire and cut that cost in half. Sorry for the long post.
