Summary

Mike Belshe, CEO of BitGo, joins David Lin and Bonnie to discuss Bitcoin's role as a safe haven and its evolving correlation with stocks. He expects near-term macro and geopolitical volatility to keep Bitcoin rangebound before growth later in 2025, while also highlighting the pro-crypto shift in Washington. The conversation covers the Bybit hack, crypto custody security, cold storage, insurance, banks entering crypto custody, and quantum computing risks to Bitcoin.

  • Mike Belshe argues Bitcoin is a safe haven and will become less correlated with stocks over time.
  • He sees Bitcoin trading sideways near term due to tariffs, inflation, unemployment, and Middle East risks, but growing later this year.
  • The White House Crypto Summit signals a shift from enforcement-driven regulation to fostering digital asset innovation.
  • The Bybit hack underscored crypto security risks, though Belshe praised Bybit's incident response and client-loss coverage.
  • Belshe advocates cold storage, multi-signature/MPC controls, regulated custodians, and insurance for sizable digital assets.
  • He says OCC guidance allowing banks into crypto custody could make banks partners or competitors, with positive banking change.
  • Quantum computing is a long-term risk to Bitcoin, especially old coins and single-key wallets, requiring quantum-resistant solutions.

Bitcoin is safe haven and top performer.
Bitcoin is always a safe haven asset. Although it has been correlated with stocks in the past, it should become increasingly uncorrelated over time. Over one-, five-, and ten-year periods, and across most ranges over the last decade, Bitcoin has been the best-performing asset. Its volatility is not unexpected because it remains small relative to other markets, so investors should look through short-term drawdowns.

Pro-crypto policy boosts digital assets.
The new administration and White House Crypto Summit signal a shift away from regulation by enforcement toward working with the crypto industry and fostering innovation in digital assets. This should unlock innovation and be positive for digital assets.
