Summary

This Week in AI covers Tesla's earnings and strategic shift from the Model S/X to autonomy and Optimus robots, plus SpaceX's planned IPO and Starlink expansion. The episode also reviews Figure's autonomous humanoid demo, Google's Gemini integration into Chrome, Alpha Genome's DNA sequencing breakthrough, Claude's interactive tools, and xAI's Grok Imagine update. It closes with discussion of OpenAI's $100 billion raise and concerns about spending discipline, alongside Kimi K2.5's local-running breakthrough.

  • Tesla is retiring Model S/X and increasing capex to scale Optimus and robotaxi.
  • SpaceX plans a June IPO to raise $50B, with Starlink direct-to-cell and Apple integration.
  • Figure's Helix O2 shows fully autonomous delicate manipulation; humanoid robots may deploy first in factories.
  • Google integrated Gemini into Chrome for 3.8B users and released Alpha Genome for DNA research.
  • Anthropic adds interactive tools and MCP integrations to Claude; xAI releases Grok Imagine update.
  • OpenAI is raising $100B amid concerns over spending and profitability.

Tesla pivots to autonomy and robots.
Tesla's earnings and forward guidance show it is fully leaning into autonomy and robots rather than legacy cars. It is retiring the Model S and Model X, increasing capital expenditure to roughly $20 billion to scale production for CyberCab and Optimus, targeting one million Optimus units this year and eventually much higher volumes. The robotaxi service is expanding to nine cities and insurance data suggests it is safer than human drivers. Near-term numbers may disappoint, but the forward-looking story is a pivot to autonomous robots and robotaxis.

SpaceX IPO and Starlink growth.
SpaceX is reportedly targeting a June IPO to raise $50 billion at about a $1.5 trillion valuation, which would be one of the largest listings ever. Josh views it as a huge opportunity and is excited for public-market investors to access it. The Starlink network is the key asset: Starship launches v3 satellites that are 20-40 times more effective, expanding bandwidth and direct-to-cell service, with Apple reportedly integrating Starlink into the iPhone 18 Pro and T-Mobile users able to try it now.

Humanoid robots progress, factories first.
Figure's Helix O2 demo showed a humanoid robot completing a four-minute fully autonomous dishwasher task with 61 precise manipulations, using a small neural net and tactile sensors rather than hardcoded moves. Ejaaz sees this as rapid progress in dexterity and autonomy and is bullish on the segment. He expects humanoid robots to deploy first in factories, citing Figure's Helix O1 working 24/7 at BMW, with Tesla Optimus likely following a similar factory-first path.

Gemini in Chrome boosts Google loyalty.
Google is embedding Gemini as a personal AI agent directly into Chrome for 3.8 billion users, meeting users where they already browse and leveraging Google account context. The agent can take actions and prompt users proactively, which should make users more productive and, importantly, more loyal to Google. Bundled Cloud credits in the AI Pro and Ultra plans also deepen the Google AI ecosystem.
