Summary

Oil drops sharply as the U.S. and Iran pause military strikes, easing inflation fears and lifting equities. European natural gas remains under pressure with elevated prices due to Strait of Hormuz LNG disruption and dangerously low storage ahead of winter. CXMT soars on its Shanghai debut, while big tech earnings this week face high expectations and AI spending scrutiny. Wildfires in France and Spain add to regional stress. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang touts South Korea's semiconductor golden age and predicts a tenfold industry expansion.

  • US-Iran military pause sends oil below $90, supporting bonds and global equities.
  • European natural gas prices remain elevated as disruption of 20% of global LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz persists and storage is only 50% full.
  • China's homegrown chip champion CXMT surges 535% on Shanghai debut, signaling optimism in Chinese tech.
  • Big tech earnings this week seen as a high hurdle after Alphabet's selloff, with AI capital spending and valuations under pressure.
  • Fed and Bank of England expected to hold rates, though oil-driven inflation risks keep hawkish pressure in the background.
  • Wildfires in Spain and France force mass evacuations, with containment still uncertain.
  • NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang announces major partnership with SK Group and calls Korea a semiconductor golden age, forecasting the industry will need to be 10x larger over the next decade.

U.S. AI stocks under near-term pressure.
Valuations in AI and semiconductors have soared, but semiconductor sector inflows this month have been minimal, suggesting investors realize the party cannot continue forever. There is no meaningful sign that the rotation out of the semiconductor industry is over, so U.S. AI stocks will remain on the back foot for the time being.

European gas prices remain elevated.
Disruption of LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz, which carries about 20% of global LNG, has no clear end date, keeping gas markets disrupted. Europe's gas storage is only 50% full, well below normal, and the region must compete with Asian buyers for available cargoes. The futures curve shows elevated prices through summer and winter, with near-term risk premium pushing summer prices above winter in an unusual seasonal pattern. All of this keeps European gas prices elevated.

Korea semiconductor golden age.
Korea is experiencing a golden age; its semiconductor and industrial business is booming. The country has the ability to help the world build out AI infrastructure, and NVIDIA is entering a massive $500 billion+ partnership with SK Group, demonstrating deep commitment. SK Hynix, as part of this ecosystem, stands to benefit directly.

Semiconductor industry to grow tenfold.
The semiconductor industry used to build computers only for people to use, but now computers are being built for AI agents and robots to use them. In the future there will be billions of robots and agents all using computers. This structural shift means the semiconductor industry will probably have to be 10 times larger than it is today over the next decade.
