Summary

At the All-In Summit, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt discusses the US-China AI race, arguing China is skipping the AGI race to apply AI to consumer apps and robotics while winning the open-weights ecosystem with models like DeepSeek R1. He explains why he took over Relativity Space, how drone warfare in Ukraine is rewriting military doctrine, and why he still calls the AI revolution underhyped while pushing back on three-year superintelligence timelines. He also covers remote work, demographics and American exceptionalism, and praises Gemini's leaderboard leadership and DeepMind's scientific-discovery work.

  • Schmidt opposes remote work for young employees and cites China's 996 work culture as the competition.
  • China is not chasing AGI (chip limits, shallow capital markets) but applies AI to consumer apps and robotics and leads on open-weight models.
  • DeepSeek R1's low-precision reinforcement-learning training is called a major achievement that disrupted Meta's open-source plans.
  • Schmidt took over Relativity Space as a low-Earth-orbit launch competitor with a full order book.
  • Drone warfare makes tanks and fixed infrastructure obsolete; the next phases are counter-drone detection and RL battle planning.
  • Savant-level superintelligence may arrive in six to seven years, but AGI requires self-set objectives and shows no evidence yet.
  • Declining fertility (China about 1.0, Korea 0.78) shrinks customer bases; Schmidt favors immigration as a partial fix.
  • Gemini releases top the leaderboards and DeepMind's scientific-discovery work is described as a path to AGI.

AI revolution is underhyped, agents transform businesses
Schmidt says the AI revolution is underhyped. Agents will become very powerful and start working together, the agentic revolution will change businesses, and scale-free problems such as programming and math keep producing enormous, fast gains as more hardware and software are applied to them. He rejects the 'San Francisco narrative' of superintelligence within about three years but expects savant-level superintelligence (a chemist, physicist or mathematician savant) in roughly six or seven years; true AGI, meaning a system that can set its own objective function, has no evidence yet and recursive self-improvement is still five to ten years out. In the meantime everyone will have prompt-driven AI assistants that are incredibly helpful.

Chinese robotics firms repeat the EV playbook
China is not pursuing AGI because of US chip restrictions and because its capital markets cannot fund $100 million data-center bets on a wing and a prayer; instead it is focused on applying AI to everything, especially consumer apps and robots. Schmidt visited the Shanghai robotics companies and says they are trying to do in robots what China already did in electric vehicles: incredible work ethic, well funded, and without the crazy valuations seen in America, so they can win in applied AI and robotics even while the US chases AGI.

Cheap drones and counter-drone tech replace tanks
Schmidt argues warfare is being rebuilt around cheap autonomous systems: a $4,000-5,000 drone carrying a 2 kg payload can destroy a $30 million tank (the kill ratio), drones are already more cost-effective than mortars, grenades and artillery, and mobile forces replace fixed, heavy military infrastructure. The next phase is drone versus drone, where the edge moves to detecting and destroying enemy drones first, followed by reinforcement-learning battle planning across millions of drones, very fast air-based mobility, hypersonics and underwater unmanned vessels (Ukrainian USVs drove the Russian fleet out of the Black Sea). Drones are much cheaper, algorithms and synthetic training data can be stockpiled, and the hosts note he is investing in drone technology himself.

Gemini leads leaderboards, DeepMind pursues AGI
Asked what Google is doing on the path to AGI, Schmidt says every release of Gemini lands at the top of the leaderboard, Gemini 2.5 just overtook everybody and he is sure another model is coming, while Demis Hassabis is working hard on AI-driven scientific discovery, which Schmidt sees as a real path to AGI. Google's model leadership and DeepMind's research pipeline are the company-specific edge; he notes he is no longer at Google.
