Scotland curtails about 8-10 TWh per year, roughly 10% of its wind resource, because 14 GW of GB's 30-35 GW wind is in Scotland while Scotland has only about 10% of national power demand. Siting data centers near the most curtailed offshore wind projects on the east coast connects excess supply with new demand before the southern transmission constraint, reducing curtailment costs. However, data centers need 24/7 power, so low wind would require wider network flows or on-site gas generation, making this only part of the solution.

UK must build data center capacity.
The UK has abundant renewable energy, especially in Scotland, but often pays renewable assets to turn off. Building data centers to offtake that power makes economic sense, improves UK and Scottish economic security, reduces curtailment costs, and is needed because UK data center vacancy rates are at historic lows. Although data center location has historically been driven by customer proximity and latency, that relationship is loosening with AI inference, so the UK should build capacity to serve its own market and attract investment.
