Summary

Doug Casey warns that the US is heading toward a 'Greater Depression' driven by excessive government spending, deficits, Federal Reserve distortions, and tariffs. He argues the national debt will be defaulted on, potentially hyperinflating the US dollar, and advises avoiding most North American markets except resources. He favors gold, gold miners, broader mining/resource stocks, uranium, Bitcoin, Argentina, and robotics, while warning of an AI/tech bubble.

  • Doug Casey says the US is on track for a Greater Depression due to deficits, Fed policy, and government intervention.
  • He expects the national debt to be defaulted on, either through non-payment or money printing that hyperinflates the dollar.
  • He is bullish on Argentina under Milei's deregulation reforms and says his bet there is paying off.
  • He recommends gold as safety and hard money, and favors gold miners, developers, and explorers.
  • He likes the broader resource/mining sector, including silver, copper, nickel, and especially uranium/nuclear.
  • He warns of an AI/tech speculative bubble and heavy Magnificent Seven concentration risk.
  • He is positive on Bitcoin as potential sound money and on robotics as a future multi-trillion-dollar industry.
  • He criticizes tariffs, the Fed, college, and retirement as traps, though these are not direct trades.

Milei reforms make Argentina attractive
Argentina is looking much better because President Milei is dismantling the country's pathological government, abolishing regulatory agencies, and freeing the economy. If Milei wins the upcoming elections and can change laws rather than ruling only by executive order, Argentina could overturn 80 years of decline. Casey made a big bet on Argentina years ago and it is paying off.

Avoid North American markets except resources
He is not sanguine about any North American markets today except the resource market. The US government has grown at the expense of the private economy, running $2 trillion to $3 trillion deficits, and the Federal Reserve has cranked distortions and misallocations into the economy. Unwinding them would bankrupt businesses and unemploy people, and he sees a greater depression ahead that will be worse and longer-lasting than 1929-1946.

Bitcoin may join gold as money
In a world without a central bank, money should be a commodity that cannot be created out of thin air. Gold would be ideal, and perhaps in the years to come it will be joined by Bitcoin, which he has been a fan of since 2017.

Debt default hyperinflates US dollar
The US national debt will never be paid off. It will be defaulted on either by not paying, which would cause a deflationary collapse, or by printing more money to pay it, which means the US dollar will eventually be hyperinflated out of existence. This would be the ultimate catastrophe for the US.

AI/tech bubble will end badly
AI is a transformative technology, but there is a speculative bubble in the stock market and in massive data-center spending by companies such as Meta and Google. Financial markets and retirement accounts are heavily skewed toward the Magnificent Seven high-tech stocks; if the AI boom goes bust, investors will lose badly and may demand government bailouts. He calls this a classic high-tech, big-wreck setup.

Robotics is next multi-trillion-dollar industry
Robotics will be the next multi-trillion-dollar industry following AI. It is advancing faster than Moore's law, China is ahead while Boston Dynamics leads in the US, and in 5 to 10 years everyone may have a robot. There are dangers from government militarization, but the opportunity is large.

Buy gold as hard-money safety
Buy gold now for safety and security because it is the only financial asset that is not simultaneously someone else's liability. It is a way to exit fiat currencies such as the US and Canadian dollar, which central banks can print at will. Although gold is no longer underpriced relative to real goods and assets, it remains a core hard-money savings vehicle.

Gold miners are profitable and underpriced
He is putting money into gold mining stocks, including producers, developers, and explorers. Producers are very profitable because industry all-in sustaining costs are around $1,300 per ounce while gold trades near $3,300 per ounce, yet the market does not care. Developers and explorers offer optionality, and in past bull markets many gold stocks have gone up 10-to-1, 100-to-1, or even 1,000-to-1, though they are very volatile.

Gold miners are profitable and underpriced
Across resource sectors such as gold, silver, copper, nickel, and base metals, the commodities and especially the mining stocks are cheap. Mining is a difficult business with permitting, native, and government headaches, but those negatives are over-discounted. Mining stocks are close to their cheapest levels in history relative to other stocks and are the only cheap place in the stock market; he expects the average mining stock could multiply 5x to 10x in a year or two.

Uranium benefits from nuclear power demand
Do not forget uranium. Nuclear is the safest, cheapest, and cleanest form of mass power generation, and the technology is changing rapidly. China has many times more electrical generating capability than the US, and nuclear is the only solution to that problem, which supports uranium demand and related resource stocks.
