Venezuelan debt rallies on stable transition
Venezuela has about $30 billion of sovereign debt and $30 billion of PDVSA debt outstanding; both trade around 25-30 cents on the dollar and have rallied in recent weeks. If a stable post-Maduro transition emerges and Venezuela moves to make good on its defaulted debt, the bonds could rally much more; absent a stable transition, recovery and price direction are uncertain.

Venezuela debt restructuring offers bondholder upside
Venezuela's defaulted debt has traded around five cents on the dollar and already rallied about 20%; if a transition allows IMF review, data opening, and talks with hedge funds and bondholders, a debt renegotiation could deliver large upside for bondholders, though much work remains.

Venezuelan defaulted debt offers restructuring upside.
Venezuelan defaulted debt has rallied and should continue to rise because it trades around 35 cents on the dollar versus a claim value 1.5-2x higher; a relatively simple restructuring within 18-24 months could unlock substantial value.

Venezuela seeks debt restructuring.
Maduro says Venezuela is a good payer that has declared a renegotiation of its external debt, remains in touch with bondholders, and has a viable financial plan to normalize payments progressively; however, sanctions and frozen bank accounts prevent payment, and normalization depends on the US and G7 allowing access to capital markets.

Venezuela bond easy money has been made.
Defaulted Venezuelan sovereign bonds have already doubled over the last three months, so some of the easy money in that trade has been made. He does not present a fresh bullish call, but flags that the easy phase of the sovereign debt move is behind.

Venezuela debt rally needs stable transition
Schatzker points to roughly $30 billion each of defaulted Venezuelan sovereign debt and PDVSA debt, with the debt still trading around 25-30 cents on the dollar after recent rallies. He says a sense that Venezuela will ultimately make good on the defaulted debt under a new stable regime could drive a much stronger rally, while no sign of a stable transition leaves the outcome unpredictable.
