Intuit - SaaSpocolypse thoughts

I asked ChatGPT what it would take to do accounting for "my small business". Takeaways -- the things that would need to work are: (i) Anthropic/OpenAI adds comprehensive integrations to banks & financial institutions; (ii) they would need to assign people to the product to make sure it's supported, reliable, accurate, and better each year; and (iii) people would have to trust them to not hallucinate. Overall, seems unlikely that people would want to turn to a generic \*consumer\* AI to do this, especially since it won't be free. It takes resources and prioritization at Anthropic/OpenAI and they have bigger fish to fry. The more credible threat is that Microsoft (or Anthropic/OpenAI's \*enterprise\* platform) feels that accounting capability makes their agent stronger. They could either add these integrations and product capabilities or they could integrate with an existing player. There's a real possibility that they just integrate with existing players because there are so many new and larger opportunities to pursue for each of the companies building these agents. That said, if this plays out, enterprise software like QuickBooks gets relegated to a layer of accounting capabilities that might be interchangeable with someone else. It's quite possible less value accrues to a company providing this sort of layer. It becomes "legacy software". If I were managing Intuit, I would try to jockey to be the primary agent for the small business. Use open-source models like KimiK2 or DeepSeek to provide a small business agent and add as many functions to it as possible. If this SaaS-pocalypse plays out, they could come out owning more business for one their major type of customers.
