I modeled out Meta's valuation. Here's what the numbers actually say

I've been working on a model for Meta and would like to share my framework. I'm not providing buy/sell recommendations. I'm providing my model based on how I see the current setup. With the price at \~632, the market is treating META like an AI winner. The core business justifies a lot of that optimism. “great company” does not mean “great investment at this price.” I’ll explain what I mean. **Let’s not forget that the ad engine is still a beast** This is not discussed enough. The story at Meta is less about user growth and more about ad efficiency. If user growth is stagnant but Meta continues to improve targeting and increases conversion rates, advertisers will pay more per impression. This is because AI will increase revenue. Increased conversion and targeting efficiency results in a flexible margin. That is what keeps the base case intact. The ad business is arguably the best cash machine in tech. **Real swing factor: AI CapEx** Meta is expected to spend $52B to $62B in AI. That number is hard to ignore. From a bull case perspective, AI improves engagement, targeting, and monetization on Instagram, Facebook and its messaging platforms. This increases profit per user. The ad business will justify the spending and will pay for itself. Bear case: Capex increasing, margins decrease, and returns take longer than the market can wait. We have seen this with all “ invest now, monetise later” cases.  The most important metric for me is not top line growth. It is whether spending on AI translates to greater profit per user. That is the most important thing.  **Reality Labs: a call option, not a thesis.** Still losing money. Currently, not contributing to the valuation meaningfully. If AR/VR becomes a major computing platform then there is potential asymmetric upside. However, this is not in my base case and nor should it be for most people. **The part most people skip: multiple compression.**  Even with perfect execution on Meta’s part, there is no guarantee the stock performs. If rates and inflation remain sticky, and the market determines AI capex is out of control, tech multiples will compress. If you are already trading at a premium, solid execution can lead to flat/negative returns if the market re-rates. It is not worth it to take for granted the fact that execution equals stock price appreciation. **My analysis** Revenue Growth | Terminal P/S | Price Target Bear | 10% | 6x | \~$431 Base | 15% | 8x | \~$717 Bull | 20% | 10x | $1,000+ The potential upside is modest if AI execution is strong, and if growth is modest and multiples compress, there is meaningful downside. Given this risk/reward situation, I'm not particularly tempted to short this, but I similarly wouldn't be tempted to ‘back the truck’ up on this. **TLDR:** Meta is betting big on AI which is a high quality business. The ads business is core and strong. However, this price means a lot of assumptions going right. It is not broken, not cheap, somewhere in the middle. I can share the model with anyone who wants to tinker with it.
