It will accelerate your investing acumen.
You will naturally learn more about economy, business and real world by following companies that are in different stages of their life.
Invest in established monopolies, companies with a moat, reputation, visibility. You would rarely find them really chip, they are that good.
invest in companies that are growing, that haven't stopped their pursuit for expansion. companies that meant to excite people. you select which people this company should excite.
invest in companies that found a second, third, 4th wind. companies that should've stopped growing so fast, but they keep finding ways to surprise on one of their branches.
invest in companies, that are only the decline. beated down by the competition or economy that they are shrinking. find ones you feel have either one more tango to dance, they have will to bounce back.
Those are just examples. You can follow whatever cycle you want. what I am trying to say, by keeping mental tabs on those selected few from different cycles, that will naturally accelerate your... well professionalism.
if you can, still diversify by sectors of the economy and risk appetite.
