The Missing Link in the AI Supply Chain

*Disclosure: I have an open position, I did buy the stock.* I recently started building a position in a small Finnish company called **Canatu**. It’s not an AI model, not a chip designer, and not a hyperscaler. In fact, most investors have probably never heard of it. What caught my attention wasn’t revenue growth or hype, but a missing link in the AI semiconductor supply chain that the market largely ignores. My research originally started in a completely different place. In late 2025, silver prices exploded (up more than 100% in a short period), driven by structural shortages, solar demand, and the AI data center buildout. At that point, investing directly in silver felt late. Instead, I asked a different question: *what happens when critical materials become too expensive or physically limiting to use?* That question led me to carbon nanomaterials, and eventually to Canatu. Canatu specializes in carbon nanotube (CNT) films, produced using a proprietary dry-deposition process. These films replace traditional brittle conductors like silver or indium tin oxide in environments where flexibility, durability, and purity matter. That alone has applications in automotive sensors and heated glass, but the real asymmetry appears in semiconductors. Modern AI chips are made using **EUV lithography**, a process dominated entirely by ASML. Inside these machines sits a tiny but critical consumable called a *pellicle*, an ultra-thin membrane that protects the photomask from dust. As EUV systems become more powerful (especially with High-NA EUV), traditional silicon-based pellicles are hitting hard physical limits: overheating, deformation, and light loss. This is where carbon nanotube pellicles quietly enter the picture. CNT pellicles are more heat-resistant, mechanically stable, and transmit more EUV light. That matters because every percent of light loss translates into massive energy and throughput costs at the fab level. As lithography power increases, CNT pellicles move from nice optimization to functional necessity. What makes this interesting from an investment perspective isn’t just the technology, but the business model. Canatu doesn’t plan to mass-manufacture pellicles itself. Instead, it sells specialized reactors and licenses the process to partners inside the semiconductor supply chain. That shifts manufacturing risk to customers while Canatu captures recurring, high-margin licensing and consumables revenue. There are strong indications (via licensing partners and management statements) that Canatu is already embedded indirectly in the ecosystems of major players like Samsung, and potentially TSMC, without being publicly named due to NDAs. I’ve done more detailed modeling on pellicle demand under the Low-NA → High-NA EUV transition, but didn’t want to overload this post with technical details. The stock is small, illiquid, and not easily accessible on many platforms. Financials still reflect a company transitioning from R&D to industrial scale. That’s the risk. But that’s also the asymmetry. If CNT pellicles become standard as High-NA EUV ramps over the next decade, Canatu sits in a position where volume growth is driven by physics, not sentiment. I’m not betting on who wins the AI race. I’m betting on a tool the winners can’t do without. Curious if anyone else here looks at semiconductor supply chain picks rather than the obvious AI names.
