Hello- I am just now reading the Bogleheads books in my early 50s and trying to right some wrongs I have made in the past with asset allocation and debt.
My husband and I have a collection of 401ks from job changes over the years. First, I would like to update the allocations in those to be 40% US stock index 20% Intl index, 40% Bond index. Eventually, I will consolidate these to be no more than two accounts for each of us. When I look at the low cost US index funds offered, none of them are "total". I see on the Boglehead wiki that an alternative is about an 8:1 retail of large cap to small cap. My question is shouldn't there be mid cap representation to get to a total US market index? If so, how what %?
Thanks!
