Hi folks,
I'm 28M and I have roughly the same amount in personal savings (taxable brokerage account, HYSA, etc.) and retirement savings (Roth 401K, Roth IRA). Specifically, I have about \~$380K in each of them. I currently live in a HCOL area.
How do Bogleheads think about personal savings vs. retirement savings? I realize the convention is to put as much money as possible in tax-advantaged accounts, but of course I generally can't touch that money until I retire. Do you try to keep one higher than the other or do you just put as much as possible into retirement accounts?
I don't know what my goals are. I will probably buy a house and have a family one day, but that is in the distant future. For now, I just rent an apartment and care for only myself.
