If one has a portfolio of 100 stocks, totaling $100,000, with $ 1,000 worth of each stock. If I pick one winner, e.g., SLV (in 2025), that rises 100% in 1 year, and the other 99 stocks earned 10% that year, my return becomes 11% or a $1000 return that year on the 100% gain stock. Of course, I will not pick only gems. I will likely select a stock that makes 0%, also, canceling out the 100% gain stock, and bringing my return back down to 10%. Then there are the taxes due on gains from day trading. Wealthy people do not day trade, unless they have inside info. The rich, buy and hold index funds and only sell what they need to sell. Money compounds. Ben Franklin left a trust to the city of Philadelphia, a small amount that over the 100-plus years grew to a large sum. I believe Ben set the trust up with no withdrawals for the 1st 100 years.
