Good morning. I'm looking for some clarification on MAGI limits for ROTH IRA contributions. In calendar year 2024, my wife and I were right near the limit of $240,000 MAGI. In fact, we were at almost exactly $242,000 between the two of us, which is $2,000 above the threshold, naturally. We filed our return jointly, paid what we owed, moved on with our lives, etc etc. My wife utilizes a ROTH IRA outside of her 401k plan and has maxed it annually since roughly 2012. At the time of doing taxes, February 2025, I did not catch this, and I would assume the tax software didn't and wasn't going to catch it either. We are both in our late 30s and make nearly identical salaries for what that's worth. We utilize health savings account (to max), dependent care account for childcare (to max), and flexible spending accounts, and my wife maximizes her 457 (non roth) to the IRS limit. I would have guessed utilizing all of these would have lowered our threshold to well below the maximum allowed to have a ROTH IRA by limit, but I guess I just didn't understand it, or simply don't. My question is, should I expect an audit, and to pay a penalty for this? Since it is simply $2,000 over, is that the same as being $1 over, or $100,000 over, or does "how much" you are actually over matter? I am having difficulty understanding this. I expect to run into the same problem in 2025 as our earnings have increased slightly while deductions have remained the same. Can anyone here clairfy this? I really appreicate the time, thank you all!
