I have been using the equity portion of Paul Merriman’s Worldwide Ultimate Buy and Hold Strategy (currently 100% in equities across 10 ETFs, 0% bonds) for the past 15 years. I am 50, wanting to retire by 58. I plan to glide to 70% equities, 30% bonds by retirement start, and hold there (comfortable with relatively low bonds due to future pension and SS income).
I love our portfolio, yet I am starting to realize my wife may not love managing the complexity of it if she has to take it over after I pass or become unable to do it. Should I consider gliding to something much simpler by age 58?
A target date fund sounds like an appealing hands off DIY approach, yet I am not happy with a perpetual glide into bonds. Even if you pick a very far off target retirement date, the bonds will eventually get a very heavy allocation.
Anyone aware of a fund or simple strategy that can keep 70% stock, 30% bond allocation forever with no tinkering required? If not, what would the next easiest DIY option be? Happy to give more details if it would help.
