I am a solo Scorp owner/operator (Carpenter). I started my business about 1.5 years ago and this is the first time in my life I’ve had “excess” money to invest for retirement. I’ve maxed out my 2026 Roth IRA and will max out my 2026 Roth 401k (24.5K) next week, and will be able to invest the 401k 25% employer match as I pay myself monthly throughout the year.
In addition to that I should be able to save/invest about 40k more throughout the 2026 year (enough for 2027 Roth IRA and Roth 401k maxing out in Jan 2027)
My question is, what should I do with these funds throughout the year? I’ve read a few threads and there seems to be 2 trains of thought.
1. Invest the money in the market in standard brokerage account. The logic seems to be this is where it’s going to end up anyway, don’t keep the money on the sideline. If the market goes up, great, if the market goes down, then you can tax loss harvest the loss, and then I’ll still be able to “catch up” and max out the accounts through out the following year.
2. Park the money in a MM fund throughout the year, take the couple % then invest at the start of the following year
A little more info is I’m about 25ish years from retirement, portfolio is currently about 70% VTI/30% VXUS (no bonds), I have a 6 month emergency fund in a MM fund already.
If you’re in a similar situation, what do you do?
