Summary

Lee Ji-hwan, CEO of Aurora Investment Advisory, argues foreign investment banks have shifted back to a buy stance on Korean memory semiconductors, especially SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, and that peak-out fears are premature. He sees HBM and DRAM pricing power intact, expects HBM4 qualification to favor Samsung and SK Hynix over Micron, and views Samsung as a longer-term winner in next-generation fusion chips. He also discusses market volatility, shareholder return, export data, and a possible re-rating to 10x PER for memory names.

  • Foreign IBs including Morgan Stanley shifted to buy on SK Hynix after the correction.
  • Leveraged ETF deleveraging is mostly done and foreign long-term inflows may reduce KOSPI volatility.
  • HBM and commodity DRAM price fears are seen as exaggerated; memory suppliers retain pricing power.
  • Micron is seen as the likely HBM4 bottleneck, while Samsung and SK Hynix are initial supply beneficiaries.
  • Samsung Electronics is framed as a next-generation fusion-chip leader and preferred over SK Hynix on shareholder return.
  • Memory re-rating to 10x PER is possible if long-term contracts become the majority of revenue.
  • The strongest memory momentum is expected around Q4 and year-end.

Foreign IBs turned bullish on memory
Lee says the fear that Rubin Ultra's HBM4 capacity cut halves HBM demand is a misunderstanding. Nvidia itself said the supply is so tight that per-package capacity may be adjusted to keep total units up. HBM content pricing rises from Blackwell to Rubin, and Google's TPU may become the top HBM demander next year, keeping Samsung and SK Hynix supply tight into next year. On commodity DRAM, Chinese competition can pressure DDR4/DDR5, but Korean makers were already shifting lines to HBM and server DDR5, and memory suppliers still hold pricing power.

Foreign long-term inflows calm KOSPI volatility
Lee argues the leveraged ETF-driven volatility phase is mostly complete. Financial investment ETF holdings shrank and ETF selling emerged, while foreigners filled the gap with intermediate and long-term money. In the past, such foreign inflows tended to produce less violent, stair-step upward moves rather than sharp spikes, so he expects Korean market volatility to decline and a steadier advance.

Trim semiconductor weight; conservative on derivative sectors
Lee cautions that investors should not hold 80-90% semiconductor weight like last year and should cut the weight somewhat. He also says sectors that already rose more than semiconductors on the same AI theme, including power equipment, cables/wires, and MLCC, should be approached conservatively and separated from the core semiconductor trade.

Micron has HBM4 redesign problem
Lee says the HBM4 qualification delay issue is probably not SK Hynix but Micron Technology. According to his industry checks, Micron received a redesign request on HBM4, which usually takes more than a year. Samsung passed qualification quickly with the best sample test score and SK Hynix had no major problem. Micron therefore looks like it has a real HBM4 problem over the near term.
