Summary

Jim Cramer explains that P/E multiple compression is hammering enterprise software/SaaS stocks, especially ServiceNow and Salesforce, even though their underlying growth remains strong. He argues AI threatens per-seat software models by enabling clients to do more with fewer paid users, causing the market to treat these names as ex-growth. Cramer says he will not fight the market's judgment near term, but he would revisit ServiceNow and Salesforce once their multiples bottom and begin turning.

  • Cramer frames the P/E multiple as the key driver of stock prices.
  • Enterprise software/SaaS stocks are being hit by AI fears and multiple compression.
  • ServiceNow reported strong numbers but the stock fell sharply and its forward P/E has compressed.
  • Cramer says AI threatens seat-based pricing because clients may need fewer users.
  • Salesforce is described as facing the same multiple compression despite strong business performance.
  • Cramer does not want to fight the market's judgment while the multiple is still shrinking.
  • He says ServiceNow and Salesforce could become buys after multiples bottom and turn.

AI threatens seat-based software multiples.
Cramer says enterprise software/SaaS stocks are in an 'Armageddon situation' because their per-user/per-seat pricing model is threatened by AI, which lets clients do more with fewer paid users. The market is therefore compressing their P/E multiples and treating them as no-longer-growth names even though reported growth remains strong.

Multiple compression pressures ServiceNow despite strong results.
ServiceNow's earnings are excellent and its buyback, client wins, and core business remain strong, but the stock has become a nightmare, down more than 50% over 12 months and nearly 10% after its latest quarter. The market doubts its future because AI could shrink seat-based revenue, and its forward P/E has collapsed from 65x at end-2024 to 42x in April to just under 28x now, with Cramer seeing further multiple compression ahead.

Salesforce also faces multiple compression.
Cramer says Salesforce is doing fabulously, but it is suffering the same multiple compression as ServiceNow because the market no longer trusts software growth and is treating these stocks as ex-growth names. Management commentary is not changing that near-term judgment.
