Ideas
Maintain Korean semiconductor long exposure.
Korea's August exports hit an all-time high, with semiconductor exports up 209% year over year and staying above $40 billion for three consecutive months. Despite weak price action, semiconductors are 75% of KOSPI operating profit and 53% of its market cap, so Park argues investors should maintain semiconductor exposure, especially Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, and watch for Q3 earnings confirmation after buybacks wind down.
Buy recovering Korean battery sector.
Korea's secondary battery sector is overlooked and deeply washed-out but is starting to rebound; the EPS momentum chart shows battery sector earnings momentum turning positive, and Park includes batteries among September sectors to trade. He notes short-term selling after a recent 2-3 day rise but views the sector as part of the non-semiconductor earnings recovery.
Buy recovering US software sector.
US software stocks are rallying 20% or more and proving the 'SaaS apocalypse' thesis wrong: AI growth is not killing software, it is reviving interest in the sector. Park highlights a rotation where money is moving from semiconductor hardware into US software.
Buy Korean cosmetics and K-beauty.
Rising US Treasury yields and hawkish Fed talk make financials attractive; Korean banks and insurers are showing clearly rising 12-month forward EPS, and life/non-life insurers are improving. Foreign investors also bought banks and financials in August, so Park says financials deserve allocation weight in a rising-rate environment.
Trade broadening non-semiconductor EPS sectors.
Non-semiconductor KOSPI 12-month forward operating profit is steadily rising even as semiconductor profit estimates flatten, and the KOSPI 200 equal-weight/cap-weight ratio shows market broadening. Park says to trade sectors showing EPS momentum and foreign inflows such as IT hardware, transport, machinery, home appliances, shipbuilding, cosmetics, electrical equipment, batteries and insurance.
Watch rebounding Korean chemical sector.
Korean chemicals are deeply depressed and under-owned, but ISM manufacturing new orders are turning higher and the sector's sales growth and operating profit margin are starting to recover. Park cautiously says the chemical sector deserves near-term attention as a forgotten cyclical rebound.
Buy KOSPI into fourth-quarter rally.
September is historically weak for US and Korean markets, especially in even-year and midterm-election periods, so KOSPI may stay soft or rangebound in September. But October through December have strong seasonality with improving monthly returns, so Park advises holding through September and gradually adding exposure into the Q4 seasonal recovery.
