Summary

The U.S. and Iran pause military strikes, causing oil prices to drop sharply and easing inflation fears. The AI trade faces a pivotal week with mega-cap tech earnings, while European natural gas remains elevated on Strait of Hormuz disruptions. Jensen Huang sees a golden age for Korean semiconductors as NVIDIA deepens ties, and central bank decisions (Fed, BOE) are eyed for hawkish signals.

  • Oil drops as US-Iran pause strikes, Brent falls back below $90 after briefly topping $100 last week
  • Chinese chipmaker CXMT surges 530% in Shanghai debut in China's second-largest IPO ever
  • European natural gas elevated as Strait of Hormuz disruption slows LNG flows and storage refill risks mount
  • Fed and Bank of England rate decisions this week with markets pricing hawkish hold and possible hikes later
  • Big Tech earnings from Microsoft, Meta, Apple, Amazon, SK hynix, Samsung set to test AI investment thesis
  • NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang calls it a 'golden age' for Korea on booming semiconductor and AI infrastructure demand
  • European equities face a tough earnings season with high bars and an asymmetric downside for misses

U.S. AI stocks face near-term weakness
U.S. AI stocks and semiconductors are likely to underperform in the near term. AI valuations have soared, the semiconductor sector has seen very little inflows this month, investors are realizing the rally cannot continue forever, and there is no meaningful sign that the rotation out of semiconductors is over yet.

European gas prices staying elevated
European natural gas prices will remain elevated because LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz are disrupted (the route carries 20% of global LNG), European storage is only 50% full which is low for this time of year, the region must compete with Asian buyers for available LNG, and the phase-out of Russian LNG will force even greater reliance on global supplies. The futures curve shows summer prices higher than winter prices, pricing in higher near-term risk.

Korea's semiconductor golden age
Korea is experiencing a golden age. Its semiconductor and industrial businesses are booming, and the country has the ability to help the world build out AI infrastructure. NVIDIA is deepening partnerships (e.g., with SK Group), investing in Korea's leading AI cloud (Naver), and expects the global semiconductor industry to grow 10x over the next decade, which will benefit Korean chipmakers and the broader Korean economy.
