Summary

In this All-In clip Chamath Palihapitiya explains why he has turned cautious, opening with a Steve Cohen clip arguing that tariffs, slowing immigration and DOGE austerity will slow US growth to about 1.5% and could bring a significant correction. Chamath adds that the Magnificent 7 premium is compressing while those names stay priced to perfection, that the bond market is rewarding fiscal tightening enough to push the 10-year possibly below 4% ahead of $10 trillion of refinancing, and that the UK's 2010-2016 austerity is the closest template. He then lays out his great economic reset theory, in which durable political power depends on an asset-light majority and therefore implies stocks and real estate being walked down in a meaningful way.

  • Steve Cohen clip: tariffs, slower immigration and DOGE austerity cut US growth to about 1.5% from 2.5%.
  • Cohen is negative for the first time in a while and expects the best gains to be behind us.
  • Chamath shows the Mag 7 forward P/E premium compressing toward the rest of the market.
  • Mag 7 still priced to perfection, leaving mean-reversion risk and a market that looks marginally expensive.
  • Bond market gives credit to DOGE and tariffs; the 10-year could go under 4% with good data.
  • Roughly $10 trillion of US debt has to be refinanced within six months, making lower yields politically valuable.
  • UK 2010-2016 austerity is the template: rates low, equities sideways to down, Brexit as the political release valve.
  • Great reset theory: an asset-light voter coalition makes walking down stocks and real estate the winning political strategy.

Austerity slows growth; correction likely
Tariffs on top of slowing immigration and now DOGE add up to austerity, which he expects to cut US growth to about 1.5% from 2.5% in the second half. That makes him negative on the market for the first time in a while: he believes the best gains of this cycle have already been had and would not be surprised to see a significant correction, even if the weak stretch only lasts a year or so.

Mag 7 priced to perfection
The forward P/E premium of the Mag 7 over everybody else is compressing as investors reprice how much real upside the mega-caps still have, and the rest of the market is capturing back some of that ground. The Mag 7 remain priced to perfection, so their multiples only hold if the world stays exactly as it is; any deviation brings mean reversion. On that basis he judges the stock market at the margin to be a little expensive and not particularly attractive.

Ten-year yield may fall below 4%
The bond market has decided to give the administration credit that DOGE and tariffs will work, which has already produced meaningful compression in the 10-year yield. That matters because roughly $10 trillion of debt has to be refinanced in the next six months, so lower yields are very good for Bessent and Trump, and with a good string of data the 10-year could push even below 4%.

Politics requires walking down stocks, housing
His working great-reset theory is that durable political power now belongs to whichever party cements a coalition anchored on asset-light working- and middle-class voters who own neither stocks nor homes, plus business owners and technology people. If that coalition is the reliable path to power, policy stops rewarding asset owners: it is bad news for the stock market and for asset owners generally, and he argues that cementing that majority effectively requires walking asset markets down in a meaningful way, meaning both stocks and real estate, with no other way around it. He flags the whole thing as a theory he could change his mind on as more data arrives.
