Summary

Shin Jungho of LS Securities discusses why rate volatility is really a story about hyperscaler funding and then lays out his near-term rate view: US 10-year yields should stabilize and move lower after mid-September as data soften and FOMC scenarios play out. He sees KOSPI stuck in a rough 6,000-7,400 range through year-end, with September difficult and a possible retest of 6,000. On Korean semiconductors, he views SK Hynix's buyback as a floor but not an upside catalyst, and argues Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix can re-rate next year only if they prove shareholder returns and earnings sustainability.

  • US 10Y Treasury yields are expected to stabilize and decline from above 4.7-4.8% toward below 4.5% around mid-September.
  • The recent rate volatility is attributed to hyperscalers shifting AI capex funding from cash to debt.
  • KOSPI is seen as rangebound, roughly between the low 6,000s and low-to-mid 7,000s, with a possible retest of 6,000.
  • September's event calendar and Japan-related tightening are viewed as uncomfortable liquidity headwinds for Korean equities.
  • The US Treasury buyback is viewed as insufficient as a market safety net without softer data or productivity gains.
  • SK Hynix's buyback and cancellation supports the downside but cannot open upside until recurring shareholder returns are proven.
  • Samsung and SK Hynix next-year upside is contingent on proving free cash flow discipline and shareholder returns, with Samsung's 5x PER offering re-rating potential.

US 10Y yields likely stabilize, move lower
Shin argues the market's rate-driven volatility is really about doubts over hyperscaler funding after their Q2 results. He expects US 10-year Treasury yields to stabilize and move down from above 4.7-4.8% toward below 4.5% because high market rates are already tightening financial conditions, and upcoming employment and inflation data are likely to soften. Around mid-September, FOMC-related scenarios should all help bond yields stabilize.

KOSPI box range 6,000-7,400, no V-rebound
Shin does not expect a V-shaped recovery for KOSPI. The rebound has been weak, economic leading indicators and export growth are rolling over after peaking, and liquidity is shrinking. He expects KOSPI to stay in a box roughly between the low 6,000s and the low-to-mid 7,000s through year-end, with a possible retest of the low 6,000s. September is likely to be especially difficult because events such as FOMC, G20, and Japan's tightening are likely to be uncomfortable rather than positive catalysts.

Samsung, SK Hynix re-rate on shareholder returns
Shin says next year's earnings growth rate for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix will decelerate sharply from this year's extraordinary surge, so earnings momentum alone will not lift the stocks. The new game is whether these companies use strong free cash flow for efficient capex and shareholder returns, raising ROE and EPS. For Samsung, he notes the market is only paying about 5x PER; if the company proves this sustainability, even a move to 7-8x PER could imply roughly 100% upside and could bring foreign investors back. He expects Samsung and SK Hynix could be very strong in mid-to-late next year if that proof is delivered.
